Sodium thiomethoxide (0.9 g, 12.0 mmol) was added to a solution of 6-bromo-2-hydroxy-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3-dione (1.2 g, 4.0 mmol, from Example 4) in ethanol (200 mL). The mixture was refluxed for 48 hours and concentrated. The solid residue was dissolved in water and acidified with concentrated HCl to pH 4. The resulting precipitate was filtered, washed with water, and dried to give 0.8 g of the title compound, mp 301-206° C.
