To a stirred mixture of 4-chloro-3-nitrocinnamic acid (500 mg, 2.2 mmol) in 5 mL of anhydrous DMF with K2CO3 (911 mg, 6.6 mmol) was added 2-isopropylbenzenethiol (372 mL, 2.2 mmol) in 1 mL of DMF dropwise. The resulting mixture was then heated at 70° C. under nitrogen atmosphere over night. Water (25 mL) was then added and the reaction mixture was acidified to pH=4 with 3N HCl. The cloudy mixture was extracted with EtOAc (2×20 mL). The combined organic layer was washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as viscous light-yellow oil, which was used for coupling with further purification.
