A solution of 98 parts of diethyl methoxycarbonylphosphonate plus 47 parts of acetamidine hydrochloride in 1000 parts of anhydrous tetrahydrofuran can be refluxed for 8 hours and the solvent then removed under reduced pressure to give diethyl 1-amino-1-methylmethyleneaminocarbonylphosphonate.
