400 mg of 4-{2-[1-Benzhydryl-2-(2-carboxy-vinyl)-5-chloro-1H-indol-3-yl]-ethoxy}-benzoic acid methyl ester (0.0007M, 1 eq.) was dissolved in 15 mL of methanol. To the solution, 80 mg of 5% platinum on activated carbon was added as a slurry in 5 mL of methanol. The black suspension was placed under a hydrogen atmosphere via a balloon and stirred for 24 hrs. at room temperature. The hydrogen was evacuated and another 80 mg of 5% platinum on activated carbon in 5 mL of methanol was added and the reaction was again placed under a hydrogen atmosphere via a balloon and stirred for another 24 hrs. at room temperature. The reaction was monitored via NMR and at this point complete conversion was indicated. The reaction was filtered through Celite and the filtrate was evaporated to give 4-{2-[1-Benzhydryl-2-(2-carboxy-ethyl)-5-chloro-1H-indol-3-yl]-ethoxy}-benzoic acid methyl ester as a yellow-green solid (320 mg, 79% yield).
