A 250-mL single-neck round-bottomed flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer and a condenser was charged with 111c (450 mg, 1.26 mmol), 4-chloro-2-(1-oxo-3,4,6,7,8,9-hexahydropyrazino[1,2-a]indol-2(1H)-yl)nicotinaldehyde 103b (413 mg, 1.26 mmol), Pd(dppf)Cl2 (102 mg, 0.126 mmol), K3PO4.3H2O (85 mg, 0.352 mmol), and THF (10 mL). After three cycles of vacuum/argon flush, the reaction mixture was heated at 100° C. for 15 h. It was then cooled to room temperature and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure and the resulting residue was purified by flash column chromatography eluting with 7:1 petroleum ether/ethyl acetate to afford 111d as a yellow solid (700 mg, 63%). MS: [M+H]+ 608.
