A 25-mL flask, with stirrer bar, was charged with 2-(4-((2-(3-chlorophenyl)-6,7-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[b]pyridin-4-yl)methyl)phenyl)acetic acid (0.066 g, 0.17 mol), 4M HCl/methanol (0.22 mL, 0.87 mmol) and methanol (4 mL). After 23 h, the reaction was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate and saturated sodium bicarbonate (20 mL). The organic layer was washed with saturated sodium chloride (10 mL) then dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by chromatography on silica using hexanes/ethyl acetate (10:0 to 0:10) as eluent to afford the title compound (0.036 g, 48%) as an off-white solid. MW=391.89. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 500 MHz) δ 7.94-7.91 (m, 1H), 7.77 (dt, J=7.0, 2.0 Hz, 1H), 7.36-7.30 (m, 2H), 7.24 (s, 1H), 7.21 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 2H), 7.13 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 2H), 3.95 (s, 2H), 3.69 (s, 3H), 3.60 (s, 2H), 3.08 (t, J=8.0 Hz, 2H), 2.86 (t, J=7.5 Hz, 2H), 2.18-2.09 (m, 2H); APCI MS m/z 392 [M+H]+.
