To a stirred solution of cyclopentanol (0.61 mL, 6.75 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (24 mL) at 0° C. was added potassium tert-butoxide (0.76 g, 6.75 mmol). The resulting yellow solution was added dropwise to a stirred solution of 4-chloro-2-(methylsulfonyl)-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidine (1.76 g, 6.75 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (24 mL) at −78° C. over 15 minutes. The reaction was then stirred at −78° C. for 2 h then allowed to warm to rt. After stirring for 15 h at room temperature, the reaction was quenched with water (20 mL) and diluted with ethyl acetate (200 mL). The aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate (2×74 mL). The combined organic extract was washed with saturated sodium chloride (2×20 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by chromatography on silica using hexanes/ethyl acetate (10:0 to 0:10) as eluent to afford the title compound (0.60 g, 33%) as a colorless oil. MW=266.65. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 500 MHz) δ 7.26 (s, 1H), 5.48 (sept, J=3.0 Hz, 1H), 2.08-1.76 (m, 6H), 1.75-1.58 (m, 2H).
