To a solution of LDA (531 mL, 0.109M, 58.1 mmol) at −78° C. was added a solution of Intermediate 85a (10.0 g, 41.2 mmol) in THF (200 mL) over 30 min maintaining the temperature below −70° C. The mixture was stirred at −78° C. for 2 h, then a solution of benzyloxymethyl chloride (11.6 g, 74.1 mmol) in THF (50 mL) added, maintaining the temperature below −70° C. The mixture was allowed to warm to −30° C. over 3 h before being quenched with dropwise addition of water (300 mL). The aqueous was extracted with EtOAc (2×). The combined organic layers were dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by FCC, using 0-60% diethyl ether in cyclohexane, to give the title compound as a clear oil (6.39 g, 42%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): 1.63-1.77 (1H, m), 1.94-2.04 (1H, m), 2.08-2.17 (1H, m), 2.26-2.36 (1H, m), 3.22-3.29 (1H, m), 3.30-3.38 (1H, m), 3.74, (2H, s), 4.62 (2H, s), 4.99 (1H, s), 7.26-7.37 (5H, m).
