Procedure
To a mixture of 2,2,5-trimethyl-3(2H)-furanone (2.5 g, 19.8 mM) and 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde (4.7 g, 23.8 mM) in ethanol was added 1N aqueous sodium hydroxide (4 mL, 4mM). After the reaction mixture was stirred for 48 hours at room temperature, the solution was concentrated to 50 mL and diluted with water (300 mL). The aqueous layer was extracted with diethyl ether (4×100 mL). The combined ethereal extracts were washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride (50 mL), dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford a dark yellow crystalline solid. The crude product was purified by chromatography (silica gel, petroleum ether-ethyl acetate) to give light yellow crystals (5.0 g, 83% yield), m.p. 149°-150° C.
