A suspension of 5-carbomethoxy-1,2-dihydro-9H-carbazol-4(3H)-one (850 mg, 3.5 mM), 3,5-dimethylbenzyl bromide (765 mg, 3.8 mM), and potassium carbonate (500 mg, 3.61 mM) in 25 mL DMF was stirred at room temperature for 19 hours. The mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with H2O and saturated brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered, concentrated. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (elution with ethyl acetate) to afford 0.84 g (67%) of the 9-[(3,5-dimethylphenyl)methyl]-5-carbomethoxy-1,2-dihydrocarbazol-4(3H)-one as a foam. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ7.7 (dd, 1H, J=1 and 8 Hz), 7.3-7.2 (m, 2H), 6.9 (s, 1H), 6.75 (s, 2H), 5.45 (s, 2H), 3.8 (s, 3H), 3.0 (m, 2H), 2.45 (m, 2H), 2.2 (s, 6H), and 2.1 (m, 2H). IR (KBr, cm−1) 1726, 1653, 1602, 1465, 1442, 1282, 1172, and 1116. MS (ES) m/e 362.
