4-Methoxybenzyl 4-(N-(furan-2-ylmethyl)-N-(4-methoxybenzyl)sulfamoyl)benzoate (Example 5-2a) (750 mg, 1.4 mmol) was stirred a 2/2/1 mixture of aqueous 2N LiOH/THF/MeOH (45 mL) at ambient temperature for 3 hours. The solution was acidified with aqueous 1N aq HCl to a pH of ˜3 (ca. 100 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×, 100 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated on the rotovap. The residue was taken up in MeOH (9 mL) and purified by reverse phased HPLC (5-95% ACN in H2O gradient:40 minutes) in three-3 mL aliquots. The pure fractions were combined and concentrated to a white solid. The product was dissolved in absolute ethanol and evaporated (4×, 20 mL) to provide pure 4-(N-(furan-2-ylmethyl)-N-(4-methoxybenzyl)sulfamoyl)benzoic acid (205 mg, 36%) as a white solid. M.p. 151-152° C. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6, 400 MHz): 3.71 (s, 3H), 4.24 (s, 2H), 4.27 (s, 2H), 6.14 (d, 1H, J=3.2 Hz), 6.26 (m, 1H), 6.87 (d, 2H, J=9.2 Hz), 7.14 (d, 2H, J=8.8 Hz), 7.41 (s, 1H), 7.89 (d, 2H, J=8 Hz), 8.06 (d, 2H, J=8.4 Hz), 13.48 (bs, 1H). MS 400 (M−H).
