A tolerance is established for residues of the fungicide sodium dimethyldithio-carbamate, calculated as zinc ethylenebisdithiocarbamate, in or on melon.

As the federal pesticide law FIFRA directs, EPA is conducting a comprehensive review of older pesticides to consider their health and environmental effects and make decisions about their future use. Under this pesticide reregistration program, EPA examines health and safety data for pesticide active ingredients initially registered before November 1, 1984, and determines whether they are eligible for reregistration. In addition, all pesticides must meet the new safety standard of the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996. EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.;SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment.;INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Nonfire Spill Response

SMALL SPILLS AND LEAKAGE: If you spill this chemical, you should dampen the solid spill material with water, then transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use absorbent paper dampened with water to pick up any remaining material. Seal your contaminated clothing and the absorbent paper in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Wash all contaminated surfaces with a soap and water solution. TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 2.2(SRC), determined from a water solubility of 1X10+6 mg/L (miscible)(2) and a regression-derived equation(3), indicates that sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC). Hydrolysis half-life of 18 minutes, 25.9, and 433.3 hours were reported for sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate at pH 5, 7, and 9, respectively(2); this compound would be expected to hydrolyze in moist neutral or acidic soils(SRC). The estimated pKa of sodium N,N-dimethydithiocarbamate is 5.4(6), indicating that this compound will primarily exist in the dissociated form at environmentally relevant pHs; therefore, volatilization from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC). Sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces since it is a salt and will be nonvolatile(SRC). /AQUATIC SPECIES/ Early life stages of Salmo gairdneri, from the fertilized egg to the early fry stage, were continuously exposed to various dialkyldithiocarbamates (DDCs), ethylenebisdithiocarbamates (BDCs) and a number of degradation products. Both DDCs and BDCs induced embryotoxicity, but DDCs were generally found to be more toxic than BDCs. For some DDCs adverse effects, below ppb-level were observed. All compounds, including carbon disulfide, were shown to have teratogenic properties. The most striking effects were severe spinal and vertebral abnormalities, mostly associated with retarded yolk sac resorption. /Dialkyldithiocarbamates/

Sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate's production and use as a disinfectant, corrosion inhibitor, coagulant, vulcanizing agent, chelating agent, and fungicide(1) may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams(SRC). Sodium N,N-dimethylthithiocarbamate is used in water treatment, the rubber industry and is a registered biocide for cutting oils and aqueous systems in industries such as leather tanning and paper manufacturing(2). /LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ Rabbits received single doses of 0.5-1.5 g /dimethyldithiocarbamic acid, sodium salt//kg bw. The intake was accompanied by excitation with subsequent CNS inhibition, reduced tactile and pain sensitivity and decreased food consumption. Hematology and ECG changes were noted. Animals given 1.0 and 1.5 g/kg bw died within 24 hours. The lowest dose caused no mortality. Gross pathology examination revealed visceral congestion and pulmonary edema, hyperemia and focal hemorrhages in the gastric mucosa and intestinal swelling. The relative weights of the lungs, heart, and stomach were increased.

/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ 0.5 mL of the test substance /(Vancide (Registered Trademark) 51 (27.6% SDMC, 2.4% SMBT aqueous solution, pH 11.6))/ was applied to the shaved skin of six /New Zealand/ albino rabbits for four hours. The mean Primary Irritation Index was 1.67. Slightly irritating.

/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ The toxic effects of dithiocarbamates following parenteral administration was investigated in-vivo. Blood glucose, tissue concentrations of glycogen, glucose-6-phosphate and lactic-acid were measured. Male Osborne-Mendel-rats were given intraperitoneal injections of 2.5 mL/kg sodium-dimethyldithiocarbamate (DMDC), zinc-dimethyldithiocarbamate (ziram), or ferric-dimethyldithiocarbamate (ferbam). ...Two hours after injection, samples of whole blood, liver, and gastrocnemius muscle were taken. All three dimethyldithiocarbamate salts produced a glycogenolytic effect. ...Depression and loss of mobility of the hind limbs were observed in most animals.

/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Subchronic or Prechronic Exposure/ Body weight gain was increased in rabbits given 100 mg/kg bw (in an aqueous solution) for 15 weeks, as compared to the controls. Adynamia, changes in blood morphology, in the /nervous system/, and cardiovascular systems were noted. The fur of animals was ungroomed and had turned yellow.
