It is the major component of candicidin, a mixture of antifungal heptaene macrolides obtained from a strain of Streptomyces griseus. It has a role as a bacterial metabolite and an antifungal drug. It is a macrolide antibiotic and a polyene antibiotic.

Candicidin is a polyene antifungal antibiotic produced by a strain of Streptomyces griseus. It is especially effective against Candida albicans (more effective than amphotericin B), and is administered intravaginally in the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis.
Ergosterol, the principal sterol in the fungal cytoplasmic membrane, is the target site of action of Candicidin. Candicidin binds irreversibly to ergosterol, resulting in disruption of membrane integrity and ultimately cell death. There is some evidence that the binding site in the cell wall may be to fatty acids or fatty acid esters and that this binding capacity must be satisfied before candicidin can bring about its lethal effect by binding to sterol in the cell membrane.
Substances that destroy fungi by suppressing their ability to grow or reproduce. They differ from FUNGICIDES, INDUSTRIAL because they defend against fungi present in human or animal tissues.
Substances that inhibit the growth or reproduction of BACTERIA.
VerwendenCandicidin is a macrocyclic heptaene antifungal complex produced by Streptomyces griseus and isolated by Lechevalier and colleagues in 1953. The candicidin complex comprises analogues A, B, C and D, with candicidin D as the major component. Candicidin is active against fungi, in particular Candida albicans, and is used clinically to treat vaginal candidiasis. Like all polyene antifungal metabolites, candicidin acts by binding to ergosterol and disrupting the fungal membrane.
