513-10-0CCOP(=O)(OCC)SCC[N+](C)(C)C.[I-]OVXQHPWHMXOFRD-UHFFFAOYSA-MEcothiopate iodide is the iodide salt of ecothiopate. An irreversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, it is used an ocular antihypertensive in the treatment of open-angle glaucoma, particularly when other drugs have proved inadequate. It has a role as an EC 3.1.1.8 (cholinesterase) inhibitor, an antiglaucoma drug and a miotic. It is an iodide salt and a quaternary ammonium salt. It contains an ecothiopate.

Drugs that inhibit cholinesterases. The neurotransmitter ACETYLCHOLINE is rapidly hydrolyzed, and thereby inactivated, by cholinesterases. When cholinesterases are inhibited, the action of endogenously released acetylcholine at cholinergic synapses is potentiated. Cholinesterase inhibitors are widely used clinically for their potentiation of cholinergic inputs to the gastrointestinal tract and urinary bladder, the eye, and skeletal muscles; they are also used for their effects on the heart and the central nervous system.
Agents causing contraction of the pupil of the eye. Some sources use the term miotics only for the parasympathomimetics but any drug used to induce miosis is included here.
Drugs that mimic the effects of parasympathetic nervous system activity. Included here are drugs that directly stimulate muscarinic receptors and drugs that potentiate cholinergic activity, usually by slowing the breakdown of acetylcholine (CHOLINESTERASE INHIBITORS). Drugs that stimulate both sympathetic and parasympathetic postganglionic neurons (GANGLIONIC STIMULANTS) are not included here.
VerwendenCholinergic (ophthalmic).
VerwendenEchothiophate is a phosphorylthiocholine with pharmacological action analogous to that of isofluorophate; however, spontaneous reduction of phosphorylated enzyme occurs faster after using isofluorophate. It is used in various forms of glaucoma.
