TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 13(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC). However, the estimated pKa values of bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether are 8.14 and 9.21(3), indicating that this compound will exist almost entirely in the cation form in the environment and cations generally adsorb more strongly to soils containing organic carbon and clay than their neutral counterparts(4). Volatilization from moist soil is not expected because the compound exists as a cation and cations do not volatilize. Bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether is expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 0.75 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(5). Utilizing the Japanese MITI test, 0% of the Theoretical BOD was reached in 4 weeks(6) indicating that biodegradation is not a rapid environmental fate process in soil(SRC).
AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 13(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). The estimated pKa values of 8.14 and 9.21(3) indicate that bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether will exist almost entirely in the cation form at pH values of 5 to 9 and therefore volatilization from water surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process. According to a classification scheme(4), an estimated BCF of 3(SRC), from an estimated log Kow of -0.54(5) and a regression-derived equation(6), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). Utilizing the Japanese MITI test, 0% of the Theoretical BOD was reached in 4 weeks(7) indicating that biodegradation is not expected to be a rapid environmental fate process in water(SRC).
ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether, which has an estimated vapor pressure of 0.75 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 6 hrs(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 2.1X10-10 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(3). Bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(4), and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).
Using a structure estimation method based on molecular connectivity indices(1), the Koc of bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether can be estimated to be 13(SRC). According to a classification scheme(2), this estimated Koc value suggests that bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether is expected to have very high mobility in soil. However, the pKa values of bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether are pKa1 = 8.14 and pKa2 = 9.21, indicating that this compound will almost entirely exist in the cation form in the environment and cations generally adsorb more strongly to soils containing organic carbon and clay than their neutral counterparts(4).
/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ Exposure to vapors in the workplace has been reported to cause glaucopsia, a blue-gray haziness of vision, probably due to transient corneal edema. This change is a temporary disturbance of vision caused by exposure to ... vapors. This results from a slight increase in corneal thickness with fogging of vision and appearance of halos. On removal from exposure, vision returns to normal in a few hours without subsequent eye injury.
An estimated BCF of 3 was calculated in fish for bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether(SRC), using an estimated log Kow of -0.54(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). The compound is considered to have low bioconcentration potential using a partition coefficient test(4).
The estimated pKa values of 8.14 and 9.21(1) indicate that bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether will exist almost entirely in the cation form at pH values of 5 to 9 and therefore volatilization from water surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process. Bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether is expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 0.75 mm Hg(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(3).
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ Unoccluded application of 10 uL of undiluted DMAEE to the skin of rabbits produced marked local necrosis. More serious skin lesions were produced when the material was kept on the skin under occlusive dressing for 4 hr.
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ DMAEE was applied to the eyes of rabbits undiluted or as a 1%, 5%, or 15% aqueous solution. When administered undiluted, DMAEE produced extensive corneal injury, iritis, severe conjunctival irritation, and chemosis. A 15% solution did not produce a corneal injury and produced only mild conjunctivitis. No ocular effects were produced by a 1% solution.
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ In rabbits, measurements of corneal thickness were made prior to exposure, several times on the day following exposure, and at 24, 48, and 72 hr after the exposure. Exposures were by inhalation for 2 hr at 0.1, 1, 5, 10, 12, 15, 25, or 30 ppm DMAEE. Concentration-related increases in corneal thickness in rabbits were observed immediately following the exposure at between 10 and 30 ppm of DMAEE, with the thickness generally reaching a maximum at 3 hr postexposure. Corneal dullness or no clearly defined corneal margin, conjunctival hyperemia, and discharge were observed, which generally corresponded to the changes in corneal thickness. No increased thickness was noted in rabbits exposed at 0.1 or 1.0 ppm. Although corneal dullness was observed in some rabbits exposed at 5 ppm, only very slight changes in thickness were noted.
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ ... Groups of six female rats were exposed to air saturated with the vapors of DMAEE for 8 hr. No deaths occurred. Lacrimation and excess conjunctival irritation were observed.
For more Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts (Complete) data for Bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether (10 total), please visit the HSDB record page.
The rate constant for the vapor-phase reaction of bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals has been estimated as 2.1X10-10 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) using a structure estimation method(1). This corresponds to an atmospheric half-life of about 0.6 hours at an atmospheric concentration of 5X10+5 hydroxyl radicals per cu cm(1). Bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether is not expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment due to the lack of functional groups that hydrolyze under environmental conditions(3). Bis (2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(3), and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).
