Reactivity Profile
PHOSPHORUS PENTAFLUORIDE is a colorless, toxic gas, when exposed to air it strongly fumes. Vigorous reaction with water or steam leads to decomposition (hydrolysis) producing toxic and corrosive fumes. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of fluoride and oxides of phosphorus [Lewis, 3rd ed., 1993, p. 1034].
DOT Emergency Guidelines
If ... THERE IS NO FIRE, go directly to the Table of Initial Isolation and Protective Action Distances /(see table below)/ ... to obtain initial isolation and protective action distances. IF THERE IS A FIRE, or IF A FIRE IS INVOLVED, go directly to the appropriate guide /(see guide(s) below)/ and use the evacuation information shown under PUBLIC SAFETY. /Phosphorus pentafluoride; Phosphorus pentafluoride, compressed/
/GUIDE 125: GASES - CORROSIVE/ Health: TOXIC; may be fatal if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through skin. Vapors are extremely irritating and corrosive. Contact with gas or liquefied gas may cause burns, severe injury and/or frostbite. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control may cause pollution. /Phosphorus pentafluoride; Phosphorus pentafluoride, compressed/
/GUIDE 125: GASES - CORROSIVE/ Fire or Explosion: Some may burn, but none ignite readily. Vapors from liquefied gas are initially heavier than air and spread along ground. Some of these materials may react violently with water. Cylinders exposed to fire may vent and release toxic and/or corrosive gas through pressure relief devices. Containers may explode when heated. Ruptured cylinders may rocket. /Phosphorus pentafluoride; Phosphorus pentafluoride, compressed/
/GUIDE 125: GASES - CORROSIVE/ Public Safety: CALL Emergency Response Telephone Number ... . As an immediate precautionary measure, isolate spill or leak area for at least 100 meters (330 feet) in all directions. Keep unauthorized personnel away. Stay upwind. Many gases are heavier than air and will spread along ground and collect in low or confined areas (sewers, basements, tanks). Keep out of low areas. Ventilate closed spaces before entering. /Phosphorus pentafluoride; Phosphorus pentafluoride, compressed/

Fire Fighting Procedures
If material involved in fire: Do not use water on material itself. Extinguish fire using agent suitable for type of surrounding fire. (Material itself does not burn or burns with difficulty.) Cool all affected containers with flooding quantities of water. Apply water from as far a distance as possible. Do not apply water to point of leak in tank car or container.
Storage Conditions

Disposal Methods
SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.
Preventive Measures
SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.
SRP: Local exhaust ventilation should be applied wherever there is an incidence of point source emissions or dispersion of regulated contaminants in the work area. Ventilation control of the contaminant as close to its point of generation is both the most economical and safest method to minimize personnel exposure to airborne contaminants.
If material not involved in fire: Keep material out of water sources and sewers. Attempt to stop leak if without undue personnel hazard. Do not use water on material itself.
Personnel protection: Avoid breathing vapors. Keep upwind. ... Avoid bodily contact with the material ... Do not handle broken packages unless wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. Wash away any material which may have contacted the body with copious amounts of water or soap and water.
Evacuation: If material leaking (not on fire) consider evacuation from downwind area based on amount of material spilled, location and weather conditions.

Human Toxicity Excerpts
INTENSELY IRRITATING TO SKIN, EYES, MUCOUS MEMBRANES. INHALATION MAY CAUSE PULMONARY EDEMA.
SYMPTOMATOLOGY: 1. Severe gastritis or gastroenteritis with abdominal pain, retching, and prolonged vomiting, beginning 10-60 min after ingestion. Vomitus may become bloody. Diarrhea is sometimes violent; the feces are watery and later tarry. Dehydration becomes intense. 2. Shock, pallor, cyanosis and coldness. Rapid, weak or imperceptible pulse, low blood pressure, rapid and shallow respirations. 3. Sometimes breathing is deep and rapid, reflecting an accompanying metabolic acidosis. 4. Drowsiness, hyporeflexia, dilated pupils, coma. Vasomotor instability, shock or coma and a serum iron level in great excess of the total iron-binding capacity are poor prognostic signs. /Fluoride/
SYMPTOMATOLOGY: 5. Liver injury, consisting of hemorrhagic necrosis which is usually reversible. 6. Death from shock, usually in 4-5 hr. Sometimes following apparent recovery, pneumonia with fever or secondary shock may cause death 1-3 days later. 7. Among survivors pyloric stenosis and mild hepatic cirrhosis may be encountered as persistent sequelae, but recovery is usually complete. /Fluoride/

Semiconductor Manufacturing [Category: Industry]
Used as a source of phosphorus for ion implantation in semi-conductors; an excellent catalyst, especially in ionic polymerizations
Phosphorus pentafluoride is a relatively mild fluorinating agent of very minor industrial importance.
Methods of Manufacturing
... FROM PHOSPHORYL FLUORIDE, HYDROGEN FLUORIDE & SULFUR TRIOXIDE.
Phosphorus pentafluoride was first prepared in 1876 through fluorination of phosphorus pentachloride using arsenic trifluoride. Other routes to PF5 have included fluorination of PCl5 by HF, AgF, benzoyl fluoride, SbF3, PbF2, or CaF2. It can also be made by the reaction of PF3 and fluorine, chlorine, or chlorine in contact with calcium fluoride; by the reaction of FSO3H on fluoride and phosphate-containing rocks; by the reaction of SF6 and PF3 at high (about 400 °C) temperature; VF5 and POF3, and Ca3P2 and NF3; by the reaction of alkali or alkaline- earth metal fluorides or fluorosulfonate fluorides with P2O5 or H3PO4 at 180-200 °C; by the reaction of POF3 and HF at 60-80 °C; HPF6.XH2O and SO3 or HSO3F; by reaction of POF3.SO3 adduct with HF; and by the reaction of carbonyl fluoride with POF3. From 1968-1973 a series of patents reported the production of PF5, PF3, POF3, and the hexa-, di-, and monofluorophosphoric acids by fluorination of phosphoric and phosphorus acids using calcium fluorosulfate fluoride, CaFSO3F, produced by reaction of CaF2 and SO3.
