| Brandgefahren | Literature sources indicate that this compound is noncombustible. (NTP, 1992)Not combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. |
| Gesundheitsgefahren | When ingested, solutions cause gastric irritation by the liberation of sulfurous acid. Because of rapid oxidation to sulfate, sulfites are well tolerated until large doses are reachedthen violent colic and diarrhea, circulatory disturbances, central nervous depression, and death can occur. (USCG, 1999) |
| Gefahrenübersicht | A case of occupational asthma, confirmed by specific inhalation challenge, was reported in a worker whose job was to sprinkle dry metabisulfite on potatoes. [Malo JL, Cartier A, Desjardins A. Occupational asthma caused by dry metabisulphite. Thorax 1995 May50(5)585-6.] Similar cases have been reported in the wine, laundry, and lobster fishing industries.
