Reactivity ProfileFLUOROBORIC ACID is a strong acid. Reacts exothermically with chemical bases (examples: amines, amides, and inorganic hydroxides). These reactions can generate dangerously large amounts of heat in small spaces. Dissolution in water or the dilution of a concentrated aqueous solution may generate significant heat. Reacts with active metals, including such structural metals as aluminum and iron, to release hydrogen, a flammable gas. Can initiate the polymerization of certain alkenes. Reacts with cyanide compounds to release gaseous hydrogen cyanide. Generates flammable and/or toxic gases in contact with dithiocarbamates, isocyanates, mercaptans, nitrides, nitriles, sulfides, and strong reducing agents. Additional gas-generating reactions occur with sulfites, nitrites, thiosulfates (to give H2S and SO3), dithionites (SO2), and carbonates. May catalyze (increase the rate of) chemical reactions. Attempted drying of the acid with acetic anhydride caused an explosion at 0 °C [J. Organomet. Chem., 1975, 94, 319].

Freisetung ohne BrandExcerpt from ERG Guide 154 [Substances - Toxic and/or Corrosive (Non-Combustible)]:
EntsorgungsverfahrenSRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air qualitypotential migration in soil or watereffects on animal, aquatic, and plant lifeand conformance with environmental and public health regulations.Waste treatment ... includes a pretreatment with aluminum sulfate to facilitate hydrolysis, and final precipitation of fluoride with lime. Two methods for the treatment of fluoborate wastewater from the electroplating of tin, solder, copper and nickel striping were investigated. These involved specific ion flotation and electrodialysis. The fluoborate ion was found to bind with an alkylamine acetate by displacement of the acetate group and can be removed from dilute waste stream either by air flotation or ultrafiltration. A high density low porosity graphite anode that is resistant to the corrosive properties of fluoboric acid electrolyte was developed for electrodialysis treatment of the tin, solder and copper fluoborate containing wastewaters. In general, recoveries of the fluoborate ions were in excess of 80 percent.
Verschüttetes entsorgenPersonal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Consult an expert! Collect leaking liquid in sealable containers. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

Human Toxicity Excerpts/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ Chronic effects: (from inhalation or ingestion), may cause fluorosis. Symptoms- weight loss, malaise, anemia, leukopenia, discoloration of teeth, osteosclerosis. /Hydrofluoric acid//SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ Contact of skin with anhydrous liquid produces severe burns that are felt immediately. Concentrated aqueous solution also cause early sensation of pain, but dilute solution may give no warning of injury. /Hydrofluoric acid//SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ All forms-dilute or concentrated solution or vapor of hydrofluoric acid (HF) ... cause severe burns. Inhalation of anhydrous HF or HF mists or vapors can cause severe respiratory tract irritation that may be fatal. /Hydrofluoric acid//SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ Effects of short-term exposure: Corrosive. The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of the aerosol may cause lung edema. The effects may be delayed. /from table/For more Human Toxicity Excerpts (Complete) data for FLUOBORIC ACID (9 total), please visit the HSDB record page.
Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ For mice (5 per group), an approximate LD50 was given as <50 mg/kg bw for oral administration of tetrafluoroboric acid. The observation period was 14 days. Clinical signs of toxicity included weakness, ataxia and twisting motions. Deaths occurred between 15 minutes and 9 days after administration./LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ Following ip administration of tetrafluoroboric acid to rats (5/group), an approximate LD50 of 10-25 mg/kg bw was reported. The observation period was 14 days. Clinical signs of toxicity observed included weakness and ataxia. Deaths occurred between 27 minutes and 9 days after administration./LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ The danger of hydrofluoric acid solutions depends upon the concentration. Experimental splash burns in rabbits... have shown 20% solution to cause immediate damage with total corneal opacification with conjunctival eschemia, and with corneal stromal edema within an hour, followed by necrosis of anterior ocular structures. An 8% solution produced ischemia and corneal stromal edema persisting for 40-65 days, accompanied by corneal vascularization. Even a 2% solution caused mild persistent stromal edema and vascularization, but after 0.5% solution there was recovery in 10 days. /Hydrofluoric acid//LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ The acute oral toxicity of tetrafluoroboric acid was investigated in groups of 5 male and 5 female rats... . A 51.5% aqueous solution of tetrafluoroboric acid was used for testing. Dose levels were 10, 100, 464, and 1000 mg/kg bw and the observation period was 14 days. The 10 mg/kg bw dose was tolerated without signs of toxicity. Following 100 mg/kg bw, dyspnea, sedation and lack of appetite were observed, and in the males, half-closed eyes. The signs of toxicity were reversible after 24 hours. Following 464 mg/kg bw, signs of intoxication included dyspnea, sedation, half or completely closed eyes, hyporeflexia, ataxia, body tremor, reduced muscle tone, squatting position and prone position, vocalization, slightly reduced locomotor activity and glassy eyes, but the dose was survived by all rats. Following 1000 mg/kg bw, all animals died within 24 hours. Autopsy of the deceased rats revealed edematous and highly hemorrhagic gastrointestinal walls as well as blood-piebalded livers. Dissection of the surviving rats showed no treatment-related findings. For more Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts (Complete) data for FLUOBORIC ACID (7 total), please visit the HSDB record page.

Antidote and Emergency TreatmentMaintain an open airway and assist ventilation if nescessary. treat coma, seizures, hypotension, and renal failure if they occur. There is no specific antidote. Administer activated charcoal (although boric acid is not well absorbed). Consider gastric lavage for large ingestions. /Boric acid, Borates, and Boron/Hemodialysis is effective and is indicated after massive ingestions and for supportive care of renal failure. Peritoneal dialysishas not proved effective in enhancing elimination in infants. /Boric acid, Borates, and Boron/In acute poisonings, if a large amount has been ingested and the patient is seen within one hour of exposure, gastrointestinal decontamination should be considered ... .It is important to keep in mind that vomiting and diarrhea are common, and severe poisoning may be associated with seizures. Therefore induction of emesis by syrup of ipecac is probably contraindicated in these exposures. Catharsis is not indicated if diarrhea is present. /Boric acid and Borates/If ingestion of borate has been massive (several grams), or has extended over several days, administer intravenous glucose and electrolyte solutions to sustain urinary excretion of borate. Monitor fluid balance and serum electrolytes (including bicarbonate capacity ) regularly. Monitor cardiac status by ECG. Test the urine for proteins and cells to detect renal injury, and monitor serum concentration of borate. Metabolic acidosis may be treated with sodium bicarbonate. If shock develops, it may be necessary to infuse plasma or whole blood. Administer oxygen continuously. If oliguria (less than 25 to 30 mL urine per hour) occurs, intravenous fluids must be slowed or stopped to avoid overloading the circulation. Such patients should be referred to a center capable of providing intensive care for critically ill patients. /Boric acid and Borates/For more Antidote and Emergency Treatment (Complete) data for FLUOBORIC ACID (7 total), please visit the HSDB record page.
