Erste HilfeEYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital for treatment after washing the affected areas.INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated areatake deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be usedif not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing.INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Corrosive chemicals will destroy the membranes of the mouth, throat, and esophagus and, in addition, have a high risk of being aspirated into the victim's lungs during vomiting which increases the medical problems. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Transport the victim IMMEDIATELY to a hospital. (NTP, 1992)

(NTP, 1992)
UmweltverhaltenTERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 1,800(SRC), determined from a log Kow of 3.45(2) and a regression-derived equation(3), indicates that hexylresorcinol is expected to have low mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of hexylresorcinol from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 2.6X10-10 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), using a fragment constant estimation method(4). Hexylresorcinol is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 8.4X10-6 mm Hg(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(5). Biodegradation data were not available(SRC, 2005).AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 1,800(SRC), determined from a log Kow of 3.45(2) and a regression-derived equation(3), indicates that hexylresorcinol is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces is not expected(3) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 2.6X10-10 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), developed using a fragment constant estimation method(4). According to a classification scheme(5), an estimated BCF of 90(SRC), from its log Kow(2) and a regression-derived equation(6), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is moderate(SRC). Biodegradation data were not available(SRC, 2005).ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), hexylresorcinol, which has an estimated vapor pressure of 8.4X10-6 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(2), will exist in both the vapor and particulate phases in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase hexylresorcinol is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC)the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 2 hours(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 2.1X10-10 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(3). Particulate-phase hexylresorcinol may be removed from the air by wet and dry deposition(SRC). Hexylresorcinol does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).

Artificial Pollution SourcesHexylresorcinol's production and use as a topical antiseptic and anthelmintic(1) may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams(SRC).
Carcinogen Classification4-HexylresorcinolTR-330: Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of 4-Hexylresorcinol (CASRN 136-77-6) in F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Gavage Studies) (1988 )03/04/87No EvidenceEquivocal Evidence
Environmental BioconcentrationAn estimated BCF of 90 was calculated for hexylresorcinol(SRC), using a log Kow of 3.45(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is moderate(SRC), provided the compound is not metabolized by the organism(SRC).
Volatilization from Water/SoilThe Henry's Law constant for hexylresorcinol is estimated as 2.6X10-10 atm-cu m/mole(SRC) using a fragment constant estimation method(1). This Henry's Law constant indicates that hexylresorcinol is expected to be essentially nonvolatile from water surfaces(2). Hexylresorcinol is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 8.4X10-6 mm Hg(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(3).
Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ Tests on rabbit eyes have shown that surface of cornea can be irrigated for 5 min with 1:10,000 solution without injury, but that irrigation with 1:1,000 solution for 1-5 min caused diffuse edema of epithelium, followed in 2 or 3 hr by bluish stromal edema and hyperemia of iris./LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ When 4-hexylresorcinol was administered to cats orally in alcohol or olive oil, no pathological effects were observed at doses up to 60 mg/kg bw, but a dose of 260 mg/kg bw was lethal to all animals./LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ 4-hexylresorcinol did not induce delayed contact sensitivity in male Hartley strain guinea-pigs sensitized by the cutaneous route./LABORATORY ANIMALS: Subchronic or Prechronic Exposure/ Groups of five F344/N rats of each sex, 8 weeks of age, were given 4-hexylresorcinol by gavage in corn oil at doses of 0 (vehicle control), 31, 63, 125, 250 or 500 mg/kg bw daily for 12 days (not including week-ends), i.e. 16 days overall. No deaths occurred as a result of treatment but final mean body weights of males in the top two dose groups were 8% and 16% lower than that of the controlsbody weights of females were comparable. Rats receiving 500 mg/kg bw/day were described as being hyperexcitable. For more Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts (Complete) data for HEXYLRESORCINOL (17 total), please visit the HSDB record page.
Environmental Abiotic DegradationThe rate constant for the vapor-phase reaction of hexylresorcinol with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals has been estimated as 2.1X10-10 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) using a structure estimation method(1). This corresponds to an atmospheric half-life of about 2 hours at an atmospheric concentration of 5X10+5 hydroxyl radicals per cu cm(1). Hexylresorcinol is not expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment due to the lack of hydrolyzable functional groups(2) nor to directly photolyze due the lack of chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(SRC).
Probable Routes of Human ExposureOccupational exposure to hexylresorcinol is limited but may occur through inhalation and dermal contact with this compound at workplaces where hexylresorcinol is produced. Use data indicate that the general population may be exposed to hexylresorcinol via inhalation and dermal contact with consumer products containing hexylresorcinol. Exposure to the drug among the general population may be via ingestion to those administered the drug (an anthelmintic) and via ingestion of some over-the-counter throat lozenge formulation. (SRC)
