Non-rinsed containers should be encapsulated and buried at a specially designated landfill site. /Organic mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, or inorganic pesticides/A suggested disposal method converts the soluble fluoride ions to insoluble calcium fluoride ... a naturally occurring mineral (fluorspar) which can safely be added to a landfill. The method is as follows: add slowly to a large container of water. Stir in slight excess of Na2CO3 /sodium carbonate/. If fluoride is present add Ca(OH)2 /calcium hydroxide/ also. Let stand 24 hr. Decant or siphon into another container and neutralize with 6 m HCl /hydrochloric acid/ before washing down with large cxcess of water. The sludge may be added to landfill. Recommendable methods: Precipitation & landfill.Precipitation & landfill: Industry wastes with a high fluoride concn are treated in two phases. By adding CaO /calcium oxide/, the soluble fluorides are precipitated as CaF2 /calcium fluoride/ until the concn has been reduced to 10 mg/l. The compact sludge is disposed of on special waste dumps. |

| Wechselwirkungen | ... To examine the efficacy and safety of administration of calcium and magnesium orally and intraperitoneally to treat severe sodium fluoride intoxication ... mice were initially gavaged a lethal dose of sodium fluoride (NaF) or water. Then, mice were treated with water or varying concentrations of calcium chloride (CaCl2) or magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) via intraperitoneal (IP) route or via oral route. Mice were monitored for 24 h, and the time of death was recorded. ... Intraperitoneal injections of large amounts of CaCl2 or MgSO4 were dangerous. All mice gavaged with water and then treated with oral CaCl2 or MgSO4 survived and displayed normal activity during the experiment. The survival rate of mice gavaged with a lethal dose of NaF and then treated with a high dose of oral CaCl2 or MgSO4 was significantly higher than those of using low dose. /The authors concluded that/ oral administration of a high dose of CaCl2 or MgSO4 is a simple, safe, and effective adjunctive method for treating severe oral fluoride poisoning.Sodium fluoride added with or without sodium selenite in deionized water was administered to male mice for 8 weeks. The influences of fluoride on learning-memory behavior were tested on Y-maze, and the ultrastructure of Gray I synaptic interface in the CA3 area hippocampus was quantitatively analyzed by electron microscopy and computer image processing appliance. The main results showed that the learning capability of mice drinking higher concentration of fluoride presented remarkable deterioration. The thickness of post-synaptic density (PSD) was decreased. The width of the synaptic cleft was remarkably increased. It was found that combined administration of fluoride and proper concentration of selenium could decrease the toxic effect of fluoride. There were synergetic toxicities if the concentration of selenium was too high. The results suggested that selenium might antagonize the neurotoxicity of fluoride on behavior and morphology. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of tamoxifen and natrium fluoride (NaF) on bone metabolism, biochemical properties and blood lipids levels in ovariectomized rats. The study was performed in Wistar rats divided into 5 subgroups: ovariectomized controls, rats treated with NaF 20 mg/kg/24 hr, rats treated with NaF 20 mg/kg/24 hr+tamoxifen 2 mg/kg/24 hr, rats treated with NaF 20 mg/kg/24 hr plus tamoxifen 4 mg/kg/24 hr, and sham-operated controls. In ovariectomized rats the increase of total cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol) as well as the decrease of bone mineral content, bone mineral density and biomechanical properties was observed. The therapy with NaF increased the level of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, bone mineral density, bone mineral content. In this group the decrease of bone strength and stiffness was observed. The administration of tamoxifen reduced the changes in plasma lipid levels, but did not improve the biomechanical properties of bone tissue. The study was conducted to characterize the action of NaF, which had relaxing property in carbachol precontracted isolated bovine bronchus, on airway responsiveness challenged by acetylcholine receptor agonists in rats and asthmatic humans. Tracheal flow rate and airway resistance were measured in anaesthetized rats. NaF was delivered either before carbachol challenge or together with carbachol. Patients with mild asthma were challenged with methacholine aerosol, and NaF was delivered when FEV1 fell by more than 20%. The results indicated that: (1) in rats NaF significantly inhibited carbachol-induced bronchial constriction when inhaled prior to carbachol challenge as airway resistances in the NaF and NaF+verapamil groups were significantly lower than those in the control group(2) NaF significantly reversed carbachol or methacholine-induced bronchial constriction in asthmatic patients. In conclusion, NaF, delivered in form of aerosol, reduced bronchial responsiveness to carbachol in rats and had a bronchodilating effect on rat and human airways precontracted by inhalation of acetylcholine analogs. For more Interactions (Complete) data for SODIUM FLUORIDE (12 total), please visit the HSDB record page. |

| Ökotoxizitätsauszüge | /AQUATIC SPECIES/ Safe concentrations (SCs) and EC50s of fluoride ion (F-) for five species of aquatic insect larvae, Chimarra marginata, Hydropsyche bulbifera, H. exocellata, H. lobata, and H. pellucidula, are estimated from short-term toxicity bioassays using the multifactor probit analysis (MPA) software on sublethal data. The sublethal effect is defined as net larva migration. The 24, 48, 72, and 96-h EC50s (mg F-/L) were 178.06, 63.90, 45.41, and 38.28 for C. marginata90.06, 36.20, 26.71, and 22.95 for H. bulbifera122.64, 42.45, 29.80, and 24.97 for H. exocellata238.50, 76.22, 52.12, and 43.09 for H. lobataand 185.05, 53.74, 35.58, and 28.96 for H. pellucidula. SC values (or 8760-h EC0.01s) were 1.79 for C. marginata, 0.73 for H. bulbifera, 0.56 for H. exocellata, 1.18 for H. lobata, and 0.39 for H. pellucidula. Thus, C. marginata and H. lobata appears to be less sensitive species to fluoride toxicity during short-term and long-term exposures. This difference in sensitivity to fluoride among test species is not dependent upon the body size of net-spinning caddisfly larvaePearson correlation analysis between estimated SCs and larva dry weights was not significant (P>0.05). On the other hand, SCs calculated for test species are lower than those proposed for other freshwater and marine animals. It is concluded that the multifactor probit analysis of sublethal acute toxicity data can be a valuable methodology in environmental toxicology to estimate accurate safe concentrations of chemical compounds for aquatic organisms. /Fluoride//AQUATIC SPECIES/ Fish exposed to poisonous amounts of sodium fluoride become apathetic, lose weight, have periods of violent movement, and wander aimlessly. Finally, there is a loss of equilibrium accompanied by tetany and death. Mucous secretion increases, accompanied by proliferation of mucous producing cells in the respiratory and integumentary epithelium./OTHER TERRESTRIAL SPECIES/ /It was/ demonstrated that untreated earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris) from which gut soil had been removed (depurated) contained only 6% of the amount of fluoride reported in whole worms. Worms kept in soil were exposed to a sodium fluoride concentration of 1000 mg/L for 30 days. The fluoride content of the worms was established either at the end of exposure or following an 8-day starvation period. The fluoride concentration in treated worms with their gut contents washed out was more than 6 times greater than the fluoride concentration of untreated worms. Even after an 8-day starvation period, the concentration in exposed worms was 4 times greater than the concentration in the unexposed worms. The fluoride concentration in the worms was always lower than the concentration in the soil. |

| Natural Pollution Sources | At Lake Magadi Kenya, raw trona is dredged from encrustations on the lake, crushed, washed, and calcined to convert the sodium sesquicarbonate to soda ash. The calcined material is crushed and screened to produce a dense product with ... a characteristically high (1.0%) sodium fluoride content.Because it is so reactive, fluorine rarely, if ever, occurs naturally in the elementary state, existing instead in the ionic form or as a variety of inorgainc and orgainc fluorides. Rocks, soil, water, air, plants, and animals all contain fluoride in widely-varying concentrations. /Fluoride and fluorine/ |
| Human Toxicity Excerpts | /HUMAN EXPOSURE STUDIES/ Two adults were able to withstand a dose of 250 mg with minimal illness. One volunteer experienced slight nausea and epigastric distress lasting about 5 hr and salivation, which was intense for 15 to 30 min and stopped in half an houran itching sensation on his hands and feet lasted for about a week. Another volunteer, who took 250 mg of sodium fluoride on an empty stomach, experienced nausea, which appeared in 2 min and in 20 min incr to a max accompanied by greatly incr salivation and some retching but no vomiting. Two hr after the dose, lunch was eaten but was immediately vomited. Slight nausea continued throughout the following day but disappeared on the second day./SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ Acute, nonfatal poisoning is characterized by gastroenteritis (sudden nausea and vomiting, abdominal cramps, burning pain, and diarrhea) lasting for 3 to 6 hr and followed by collapse involving stupor and weakness lasting about 36 hr. Tetany may occur as a result of calcium depletion. In fatal poisoning, muscular weakness appears early and is accompanied by a marked fall in blood pressuretremor may be followed by clonic convulsionsdyspnea may be accompanied by a grayish-blue cyanosis. Death from respiratory and cardiac arrest may occur a few min to 10 hr or more after ingestion but usually in 3 or 4 hr./SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ In case of poisoning, plasma calcium may be decr and there is generally a disruption of fluid balance as a result of vomiting. Albuminuria is common ... In acute fatal poisoning there is corrosion of the stomach and sometimes other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. | FIFRA-Anforderungen | As the federal pesticide law FIFRA directs, EPA is conducting a comprehensive review of older pesticides to consider their health and environmental effects and make decisions about their future use. Under this pesticide reregistration program, EPA examines health and safety data for pesticide active ingredients initially registered before November 1, 1984, and determines whether they are eligible for reregistration. In addition, all pesticides must meet the new safety standard of the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996. Pesticides for which EPA had not issued Registration Standards prior to the effective date of FIFRA '88 were divided into three lists based upon their potential for human exposure and other factors, with List B containing pesticides of greater concern and List D pesticides of less concern. Sodium fluoride is found on List C. Beschreibung
Sodium fluoride, NaF, is a binary salt that is a clear, lustrous crystal or white powder. The insecticide grade is frequently dyed blue. It is soluble in water and has a specific gravity of 2.558, which is heavier than water. Sodium fluoride is highly toxic by ingestion and inhalation, and is also strongly irritating to tissue. The TLV is 2.5 mg/m3 of air. The four-digit UN identification number is 1690. The primary uses are fluoridation of municipal water at 1 ppm, as an insecticide, rodenticide, and fungicide, and in toothpastes and disinfectants.
Herstellung & Synthese
synthetische
Sodium fluoride is prepared by adding sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate to a 40% solution of hydrofluoric acid. In excess hydrofluoric acid, sodium bifluoride, NaHF2 , is formed. NaF also is made by fusion of cryolite with caustic soda. Technical grade products are usually sold at 90 to 95% purity.
