Environmental Fate
TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 3,700(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that ricinoleic acid, methyl ester is expected to have slight mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of ricinoleic acid, methyl ester from moist soil surfaces may occur(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 1.47X10-7 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), using a fragment constant estimation method(3). However, adsorption to soil is expected to attenuate volatilization(SRC). Ricinoleic acid, methyl ester is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 6.85X10-8 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(4). Biodegradation data in soil were not available(SRC, 2010).
AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 3,700(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that ricinoleic acid, methyl ester is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces may be expected(3) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 1.47X10-7 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), developed using a fragment constant estimation method(4). Using this Henry's Law constant and an estimation method(3), volatilization half-lives for a model river and model lake are 10 months and 9 years, respectively(SRC). However, volatilization from water surfaces is expected to be attenuated by adsorption to suspended solids and sediment in the water column. The estimated volatilization half-life from a model pond is 175 years if adsorption is considered(5). According to a classification scheme(6), an estimated BCF of 370(SRC), from an estimated log Kow of 6.48(7) and a regression-derived equation(2), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is high, provided the compound is not metabolized by the organism(SRC). Biodegradation data in water were not available(SRC, 2010).
ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), ricinoleic acid, methyl ester, which has an estimated vapor pressure of 6.85X10-8 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(2), is expected to exist solely in the particulate phase in the ambient atmosphere. Particulate-phase ricinoleic acid, methyl ester may be removed from the air by wet or dry deposition(SRC). Ricinoleic acid, methyl ester does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(3), and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).
Soil Adsorption/Mobility
Using a structure estimation method based on molecular connectivity indices(1), the Koc of ricinoleic acid, methyl ester can be estimated to be 3700(SRC). According to a classification scheme(2), this estimated Koc value suggests that ricinoleic acid, methyl ester is expected to have slight mobility in soil.
Environmental Biodegradation
PURE CULTURE: The average growth of the fungus Aspergillus versicolor and the bacterium Pseudomonas acruginosa on the commercial plasticizer ricinoleic acid, methyl ester, serving as the only carbon source, was 414 and 66 mg, respectively, after incubation for 7 days at 30 °C; flasks contained 2.1 g of ricinoleic acid, methyl ester and 70 mL mineral salts and yeast extract solution(1).
Environmental Bioconcentration
An estimated BCF of 370 was calculated in fish for ricinoleic acid, methyl ester(SRC), using an estimated log Kow of 6.48(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is high(SRC), provided the compound is not metabolized by the organism(SRC).
Volatilization from Water/Soil
The Henry's Law constant for ricinoleic acid, methyl ester is estimated as 1.47X10-7 atm-cu m/mole(SRC) using a fragment constant estimation method(1). This Henry's Law constant indicates that ricinoleic acid, methyl ester may volatilize from water surfaces(2). Based on this Henry's Law constant, the volatilization half-life from a model river (1 m deep, flowing 1 m/sec, wind velocity of 3 m/sec)(2) is estimated as 10 months(SRC). The volatilization half-life from a model lake (1 m deep, flowing 0.05 m/sec, wind velocity of 0.5 m/sec)(2) is estimated as 9 years(SRC). Ricinoleic acid, methyl ester's Henry's Law constant indicates that volatilization from moist soil surfaces may occur(SRC). However, volatilization from water surfaces is expected to be attenuated by adsorption to suspended solids and sediment in the water column. The estimated volatilization half-life from a model pond is 175 years if adsorption is considered(3). Ricinoleic acid, methyl ester is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 6.85X10-8 mm Hg(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(4).
Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Neurotoxicity/ Methyl ricinoleate failed to depress the smooth muscle twitch response over this range /1.25X10+5 to 4X10-4 M/ of test concentrations. Similar results were reported for spontaneously contracting rabbit jejunum.
Environmental Abiotic Degradation
A base-catalyzed second-order hydrolysis rate constant of 3.02X10-2 L/mole-sec(SRC) was estimated using a structure estimation method(1); this corresponds to half-lives of 7.3 years and 270 days at pH values of 7 and 8, respectively(1). Ricinoleic acid, methyl ester does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(2), and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).
Probable Routes of Human Exposure
According to the 2006 TSCA Inventory Update Report, the number of persons reasonably likely to be exposed in the industrial manufacturing, processing, and use of ricinoleic acid, methyl ester is 1 to 99; the data may be greatly underestimated(1).
NIOSH (NOES Survey 1981-1983) has statistically estimated that 1,509 workers (17 of these were female) were potentially exposed to ricinoleic acid, methyl ester in the US(1). Occupational exposure to ricinoleic acid, methyl ester may occur through inhalation and dermal contact with this compound at workplaces where ricinoleic acid, methyl ester is produced or used. Use data indicate that the general population may be exposed to ricinoleic acid, methyl ester via dermal contact with this compound in consumer products containing ricinoleic acid, methyl ester(SRC).
Environmental Fate/Exposure Summary
Ricinoleic acid, methyl ester's production and use as an emollient in cosmetics and as a plasticizer, lubricant, cutting oil additive, and wetting agent may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams. If released to air, an estimated vapor pressure of 6.85X10-8 mm Hg at 25 °C indicates ricinoleic acid, methyl ester will exist solely in the particulate phase in the atmosphere. Particulate-phase ricinoleic acid, methyl ester will be removed from the atmosphere by wet or dry deposition. Ricinoleic acid, methyl ester does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm, and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight. If released to soil, ricinoleic acid, methyl ester is expected to have slight mobility based upon an estimated Koc of 3,700. Volatilization from moist soil surfaces may be an important fate process based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 1.47X10-7 atm-cu m/mole. However, adsorption to soil is expected to attenuate volatilization. If released into water, ricinoleic acid, methyl ester is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment based upon the estimated Koc. Biodegradation data were not available. Volatilization from water surfaces may occur based upon this compound's estimated Henry's Law constant. Estimated volatilization half-lives for a model river and model lake are 10 months and 9 years, respectively.
