| Umweltverhalten | TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 42(SRC), determined from a log Kow of 2.65(2) and a regression-derived equation(3), indicates that p-chlorobenzoic acid is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC). The pKa of p-chlorobenzoic acid is 3.98(4), indicating that this compound will exist almost entirely in the anion form in the environment and anions generally do not adsorb more strongly to soils containing organic carbon and clay than their neutral counterparts(5). Volatilization from moist soil is not expected because the compound exists as an anion and anions do not volatilize(SRC). p-Chlorobenzoic acid is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 2.9X10-5 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(3). Using an activated sludge inoculum, 6% CO2 evolution after 5 days incubation(6) suggests that biodegradation is not an important environmental fate process in soil(SRC).AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 42(SRC), determined from a log Kow of 2.65(2) and a regression-derived equation(3), indicates that p-chlorobenzoic acid is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). A pKa of 3.98(4) indicates p-chlorobenzoic acid will exist almost entirely in the anion form at pH values of 5 to 9 and, therefore, volatilization from water surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC). The BCF for p-chlorobenzoic acid was < 10 in golden ide fish(5), which suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). A range of 2.03% to 79% 14-CO2 recovered using varying concentrations in the river die-away test(6) suggests that biodegradation may be an important environmental fate process in water, subject to conditions(SRC).ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), p-chlorobenzoic acid, which has an estimated vapor pressure of 2.9X10-5 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(2), will exist in both the vapor and particulate phases in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase p-chlorobenzoic acid is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC)the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 10 days(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 1X10-12 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC), that was derived using a structure estimation method(3). Particulate-phase p-chlorobenzoic acid may be removed from the air by wet and dry deposition(SRC). p-Chlorobenzoic acid absorbs light at wavelengths >290 nm(4) and, therefore, may be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC). |
| Expositionspfade | The substance can be absorbed into the body by ingestion. |

| Effluent Concentrations | p-Chlorobenzoic acid was detected, not quantified in 6 out of 18 samples of advanced treatment concentrate collected from Lake Tahoe, CA, Oct 1974Pomona, CA, Sept 1974Escondido, CA July 1975and Dallas, TX, Nov 1974(1). p-Chlorobenzoic acid was detected in the emissions of a municipal waste incineration plant in Germany at a concentration of 1.16 ug/cu m(2). |
| Soil Adsorption/Mobility | The Koc of p-chlorobenzoic acid is estimated as 42(SRC), using a log Kow of 2.65(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this estimated Koc value suggests that p-chlorobenzoic acid is expected to have very high mobility in soil. The pKa of p-chlorobenzoic acid is 3.98(4), indicating that this compound will exist almost entirely in the anion form in the environment and anions generally do not adsorb more strongly to soils containing organic carbon and clay than their neutral counterparts(5). |
| Artificial Pollution Sources | p-Chlorobenzoic acid's production and use as a laboratoryy reagent and chemical intermediate(1) may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams(SRC). |
| Environmental Biodegradation | AEROBIC: The biodegradation of p-chlorobenzoic acid varies considerablybiodegradation can be rapid under some conditions and slow under other conditions(SRC). p-Chlorobenzoic acid was degraded at 65 BOD% after 5 days in river water collected from the Songhua river of Jillin Province, China(1). Biodegradation of p-chlorobenzoic acid, present at 50 ug/L in activated sludge, was approximately 6% CO2 after 5 days(2). The percentage of 14-C02 recovered from river die-away tests using freshwater from Fall Creek, Ithaca, NY, and 14-C labeled p-chlorobenzoic acid following 4, 6, 8 and 12 days of aerobic incubation were 47.6%, 51.3%, 60.3%, no data at 47 pg/mL17.1%, 33.0%, 48.0%, no data at 4.7 ng/mL2.03%, 3.6%, no data, 79% at 470 ng/mLand 1.2%, 1.4%, no data, 5.9% at 47 ug/mL(3). No degradation was found after > 25 days for p-chlorobenzoic acid present at 16 mg/L in both wastewater sludge and a soil inoculum(4). 100% decomposition (as measured by UV absorption loss) of p-chlorobenzoic acid was observed after 64 days in the soil(5).PURE CULTURE: It was found that an Acinetobacter sp., utilized p-chlorobenzoic acid as an exclusive carbon and energy source, resulting in the total biodegradation of p-chlorobenzoic acid in the soil(1).ANAEROBIC: No anaerobic degradation was observed at > 65 weeks in freshwater lake sediment and > 8 weeks in municipal digested sludge(1). 4-Chlorobenzoic acid was degraded under denitrifying conditions in the sediment of the Hudson river, New York City, NY, near Albany, NY, and the East River, NY and was metabolized at rates of 32 umol/liter/day(2). The half-life of 4-chlorobenzoic acid was reported to be 235 days in anaerobic sediment (3). This compound is expected to have slow anaerobic biodegradation.Occurrence of plasmid pAC21 specifying bioconversion of p-chlorobiphenyl to p-chlorobenzoate, has been previously shown in a strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from PCB-contaminated areas of Hudson River. Conjugative plasmid pAC25, characterized in a strain of Pseudomonas putida, specifies biodegradation of 3-chlorobenzoic acid by a modified ortho pathway that involves maleylacetate, but not beta-ketoadipate, as an intermediate. Introduction of putida strains harboring pAC25 & other degradative plasmids in a chemostat & continued selection on 4-chlorobenzoic acid as major carbon source has led to the emergence of cells that harbor plasmid pAC27 encoding the 4-chlorobenzoate degradative pathway. |
| Sediment/Soil Concentrations | SEDIMENT: p-Chlorobenzoic acid was detected, not quantified in contaminated sediment enrichments collected from Bloody Run Creek and Devil's Hole Creek, located in the Niagara River watershed, Niagara Falls, NY. Samples were collected during May and November 1992 and May, August, November 1993(1). |
| Environmental Bioconcentration | The BCF in golden ide (Leuciscus idus melanotus) fish was reported to be < 10 in a 3-day experiment(1). According to a classification scheme(2), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). |
| Volatilization from Water/Soil | A pKa of 3.98(1) indicates p-chlorobenzoic acid will exist almost entirely in the anion form at pH values of 5 to 9 and, therefore, volatilization from water surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC). Volatilization from moist soil is not expected because the compound exists as an anion and anions do not volatilize(SRC). p-Chlorobenzoic acid is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 2.9X10-3 mm Hg(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(3). |
