| Reactivity Profile | Phenols, such as O-SEC-BUTYLPHENOL, do not behave as organic alcohols, as one might guess from the presence of a hydroxyl (-OH) group in their structure. Instead, they react as weak organic acids. Phenols and cresols are much weaker as acids than common carboxylic acids (phenol has pKa = 9.88). These materials are incompatible with strong reducing substances such as hydrides, nitrides, alkali metals, and sulfides. Flammable gas (H2) is often generated, and the heat of the reaction may ignite the gas. Heat is also generated by the acid-base reaction between phenols and bases. Such heating may initiate polymerization of the organic compound. Phenols are sulfonated very readily (for example, by concentrated sulfuric acid at room temperature). The reactions generate heat. Phenols are also nitrated very rapidly, even by dilute nitric acid. |
| Chemical Dangers | Reacts with oxidants. Reacts violently with bases, acid anhydrides and acid chlorides. Attacks steel and copper and its alloys. |

| Umweltverhalten | TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a recommended classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 1400(SRC), determined from an experimental log Kow(2) and a recommended regression-derived equation(3), indicates that 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol will have low mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol from moist soil surfaces will be slow(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 2.1X10-6 atm-cu m/mole(4,SRC). Limited data, mainly derived by analogy to 4-s-butylphenol, indicate that 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol may be resistant to biodegradation by non-adapted microbial populations(SRC). Resting cells of a Pseudomonas strain obtained by selective enrichment with 4-hydroxybenzoate as the sole carbon source, were able to biodegrade 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol (oxygen uptake rate of 42 nmol O2/min/mg protein)(5). A structurally similar compound, 4-s-butylphenol (at 100 mg/L) was not biodegraded over a 2 week period using an activated sludge inoculum(6)however, a phenol-adapted yeast strain, isolated from soil, readily oxidized 4-s-butylphenol (present at 1 mmole) without a lag period(7).AQUATIC FATE: Based on a recommended classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 1400(SRC), determined from an experimental log Kow(2) and a recommended regression-derived equation(3), indicates that 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol would adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC) in the water. 2-(1-Methylpropyl)phenol may volatilize from water surfaces based on an estimated Henry's Law constant of 2.1X10-6 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), developed using a fragment constant estimation method(4). Estimated half-lives for a model river and model lake are 21 and 160 days, respectively(3,SRC). Limited data, mainly derived by analogy to 4-s-butylphenol, indicate that 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol may be resistant to biodegradation by non-adapted microbial populations(SRC). A 4-hydroxybenzoate adapted Pseudomonas strain was able to biodegrade 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol (oxygen uptake rate of 42 nmol O2/min/mg protein)(5). A structurally similar compound, 4-s-butylphenol (at 100 mg/L) was not biodegraded over a 2 week period using an activated sludge inoculum(6)however, a phenol-adapted yeast strain, isolated from soil, readily oxidized 4-s-butylphenol (present at 1 mmole) without a lag period(7). An estimated BCF value of 180(3,SRC), determined from an experimental log Kow(2), suggests that 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol may bioconcentrate in aquatic organisms(SRC) according to a recommended classification scheme(8).ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a suggested classification scheme(1), an estimated vapor pressure of 0.05 mm Hg at 25 °C(2,SRC) indicates that 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol will exist mainly in the vapor phase in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC)the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be about 9 hours(3,SRC). |

| Human Toxicity Excerpts | ACUTE OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES HAVE RESULTED IN MILD RESP IRRITATION, AS WELL AS SKIN BURNS. |
| Artificial Pollution Sources | 2-(1-Methylpropyl)phenol's production and use as a chemical intermediate in the preparation of resins, plasticizers, surface-active agents(1) or as an intermediate in the synthesis of insecticides, acaricides, and herbicides(2) may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams(SRC). |
| Environmental Biodegradation | Resting cells of a Pseudomonas strain, obtained by selective enrichment with 4-hydroxybenzoate as the sole carbon source, were able to biodegrade 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol (oxygen uptake rate of 42 nmol O2/min/mg protein)(1). A structurally similar compound, 4-s-butylphenol (at 100 mg/L), was not biodegraded over a 2 week period using an activated sludge inoculum(2)however, a phenol-adapted yeast strain, isolated from soil, readily oxidized 4-s-butylphenol (present at 1 mmole) without a lag period(3). |
| Environmental Bioconcentration | An estimated BCF value of 180 was calculated for 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol(SRC), using an experimental log Kow of 3.27(1) and a recommended regression-derived equation(2). According to a recommended classification scheme(3), this BCF value suggests that bioconcentration in aquatic organisms may occur(SRC). |
| Volatilization from Water/Soil | The Henry's Law constant for 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol is estimated as 2.1X10-6 atm-cu m/mole(SRC) using a fragment constant estimation method(1). This value indicates that 2-(1-methylpropyl)phenol will volatilize from water surfaces(2,SRC). Based on this Henry's Law constant, the volatilization half-life from a model river (1 m deep, flowing 1 m/sec, wind velocity of 3 m/sec) is estimated as approximately 21 days(2,SRC). The volatilization half-life from a model lake (1 m deep, flowing 0.05 m/sec, wind velocity of 0.5 m/sec) is estimated as approximately 160 days(2,SRC). 2-(1-Methylpropyl)phenol's estimated vapor pressure, 0.05 mm Hg(3,SRC) and Henry's Law constant(1,SRC) indicate that volatilization from dry and moist soil will be slow(SRC). |
