Reactivity ProfileMETHYL ACETOACETATE is an ester. Esters react with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction of esters with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing esters with alkali metals and hydrides
LuftstandardsThis action promulgates standards of performance for equipment leaks of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) in the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturing Industry (SOCMI). The intended effect of these standards is to require all newly constructed, modified, and reconstructed SOCMI process units to use the best demonstrated system of continuous emission reduction for equipment leaks of VOC, considering costs, non air quality health and environmental impact and energy requirements. Methyl acetoacetate is produced, as an intermediate or a final product, by process units covered under this subpart.
Chemical DangersDecomposes on burning. This produces irritating fumes. Reacts with oxidants.
BrandbekämpfungExcerpt from ERG Guide 128 [Flammable Liquids (Water-Immiscible)]:Use alcohol-resistant foam, powder, carbon dioxide.
Erste-Hilfe-MaßnahmenFresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give one or two glasses of water to drink. Refer for medical attention .
Erste HilfeINHALATION: Call for medical aid. Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give aritificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.

Brandbekämpfungsverfahren... /Use/ foam, carbon dioxide, dry chemical. If material on fire or involved in fire: Do not extinguish fire unless flow can be stopped. Use water in flooding quantities as fog. Solid streams of water may be ineffective. Cool all affected containers with flooding quantities of water. Apply water from as far a distance as possible. Use "alcohol" foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide.
Freisetung ohne BrandExcerpt from ERG Guide 128 [Flammable Liquids (Water-Immiscible)]:
EntsorgungsverfahrenSRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air qualitypotential migration in soil or watereffects on animal, aquatic, and plant lifeand conformance with environmental and public health regulations.
Verschüttetes entsorgenPersonal protection: filter respirator for organic gases and vapours adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Ventilation. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Wash away remainder with plenty of water.
Preventive MeasuresIf material not on fire and not involved in fire: Keep sparks, flames, and other sources of ignition away. Keep material out of water sources and sewers. Build dikes to contain flow as necessary. Use water spray to knock-down vapors.Personnel protection: Avoid breathing vapors. Keep upwind. ... Do not handle broken packages unless wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. Wash away any material which may have contacted the body with copious amounts of water or soap and water.SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.

UmweltverhaltenTERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 1.0(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that methyl acetoacetate is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of methyl acetoacetate from moist soil surfaces is expected to be slow(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 2.7X10-7 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure of 0.892 mm Hg(3), and water solubility, 5X10+5 mg/L(4). A base-catalyzed second-order hydrolysis rate constant of 0.57 L/mole-sec(SRC) was estimated using a structure estimation method(5)this corresponds to half-lives of 140 and 14 days at pH values of 7 and 8, respectively(5). Methyl acetoacetate would be expected to hydrolyze in moist soil under basic conditions(SRC). Methyl acetoacetate is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon a vapor pressure of 0.892 mm Hg(3). One screening test observed 78% biodegradation of methyl acetoacetate in 14 days(6)although this study was not specific to soil, it suggests that biodegradation in soil may be rapid(SRC).AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 1.0(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that methyl acetoacetate is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces is expected to be slow(3) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 2.7X10-7 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure of 0.892 mm Hg(4), and water solubility, 5X10+5 mg/L(5). A base-catalyzed second-order hydrolysis rate constant of 0.57 L/mole-sec(SRC) was estimated using a structure estimation method(6)this corresponds to half-lives of 140 and 14 days at pH values of 7 and 8, respectively(6). According to a classification scheme(7), an estimated BCF of 3.1(SRC), from an estimated log Kow of -0.69(8) and a regression-derived equation(9), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), methyl acetoacetate, which has a vapor pressure of 0.892 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase methyl acetoacetate is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC)the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 5 days(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 3.25X10-13 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(3). Methyl acetoacetate does not absorb light with wavelengths >290 nm(4) and is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).
Unerwünschte WirkungenNeurotoxin - Acute solvent syndrome
ExpositionspfadeThe substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour.
Signs and SymptomsCough. Dizziness. Drowsiness. Headache. Sore throat.Redness. Pain.
Soil Adsorption/MobilityUsing a structure estimation method based on molecular connectivity indices(1), the Koc for methyl acetoacetate can be estimated to be 1.0(SRC). According to a classification scheme(2), this estimated Koc value suggests that methyl acetoacetate is expected to have very high mobility in soil.
Natural Pollution SourcesMethyl acetoacetate was found in the condensed smoke of fires of ponderosa pine sapwood, needles, bark, litter, duff, and humus(1).
Artificial Pollution SourcesMethyl acetoacetate's production and use as a solvent for cellulose ethers and esters and in organic synthesis(1) may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams(SRC).
Environmental BiodegradationAEROBIC: Methyl acetoacetate, present at 100 mg/L, reached 78% of its theoretical BOD in 2 weeks using an activated sludge inoculum at 30 mg/L and the Japanese MITI test(1). Methyl acetoacetate was degraded more than 90% in 2 days at 22 °C using activated sludge inoculum in a Zahn-Wellens screening test(2).
Environmental BioconcentrationAn estimated BCF of 3.1 was calculated for methyl acetatoactate(SRC), using an estimated log Kow of -0.69(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).
Volatilization from Water/SoilThe Henry's Law constant for methyl acetoacetate is estimated as 2.7X10-7 atm-cu m/mole(SRC) derived from its vapor pressure, 0.894 mm Hg(1), and water solubility, 5X10+5 mg/L(2). This Henry's Law constant indicates that methyl acetoacetate is expected to volatilize slowly from water surfaces(3). Methyl acetoacetate's estimated Henry's Law constant indicates that volatilization from moist soil surfaces may occur(SRC). Methyl acetoacetate is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon its vapor pressure(1).
