Gefahrenhinweise
Regulatory Information
Acetyl chloride, fluoro-: Does not have an individual approval but may be used under an appropriate group standard
The New Jersey Worker and Community Right to Know Act requires public and private employers to provide information about hazardous substances at their workplaces. (N.J.S.A. 34:5A-1 et. seq.)
Fire Hazards
When heated to decomposition, it emits very toxic fumes of chlorine and fluorine-containing compounds. (Non-Specific -- Chloroacetyl Chloride and Fluoroacetic Acid) Some of these materials may ignite combustibles (i.e., wood, paper, oil, etc.) or react violently with water. (EPA, 1998)
Hazards Summary
Ingestion could result in fluoracetate poisoning; [HSDB] Reacts with water producing hydrogen chloride; Highly toxic by inhalation; Has corrosive effects to skin and irritates eyes; [CAMEO] Forms hydrogen chloride on contact with moisture; A corrosive substance that can cause injury to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract; [MSDSonline] See Sodium fluoroacetate.
Reactivity Profile
FLUOROACETYL CHLORIDE, an acid halide, when heated to decomposition, emits very toxic fumes of chlorine and fluorine-containing compounds. May react vigorously or explosively if mixed with diisopropyl ether or other ethers in the presence of trace amounts of metal salts [J. Haz. Mat., 1981, 4, 291].
CERCLA Reportable Quantities
Releases of CERCLA hazardous substances are subject to the release reporting requirement of CERCLA section 103, codified at 40 CFR part 302, in addition to the requirements of 40 CFR part 355. Fluoroacetyl chloride is an extremely hazardous substance (EHS) subject to reporting requirements when stored in amounts in excess of its threshold planning quantity (TPQ) of 10 lbs.
Sicherheit und Schutzausrüstung
Fire Fighting
(Non-Specific -- Chloroacetyl Chloride and Fluoroacetic Acid) Spray cooling water on containers that are exposed to flames until well after fire is out. Move container from fire area if you can do so without risk. Do not get water in container, as material may react violently with water.
First Aid
Warning: There is no known antidote for fluoroacetate intoxication. Symptomatic and supportive care should be provided. Highly toxic by inhalation; corrosive to the skin and irritating to the eyes. Delayed convulsant. Effects usually appear within 30 minutes of exposure but may be delayed as long as 20 hours. Caution is advised. Vital signs should be monitored closely.
Nonfire Spill Response
(Non-Specific -- Chloroacetyl Chloride and Fluoroacetic Acid) Keep unnecessary people away; isolate hazard area and deny entry. Stay upwind; keep out of low areas. Do not touch spilled material; stop leak if you can do so without risk. Use water spray to reduce vapors (may react violently with water).
Protective Action Criteria (PAC)
0.014 [mg/m3]
0.15 [mg/m3]
0.90 [mg/m3]
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
For emergency situations, wear a positive pressure, pressure-demand, full facepiece self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or pressure- demand supplied air respirator with escape SCBA and a fully-encapsulating, chemical resistant suit. (EPA, 1998)
