Disposal Methods · 1 Eintrag

SRP: Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in air, soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations. If it is possible or reasonable use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational harm/injury/toxicity or environmental contamination.

Environmental Fate · 3 Einträge

TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 6(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that methyl fluoroacetate is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC). Volatilization of methyl fluoroacetate from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 3.5X10-4 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), developed using a fragment constant estimation method(2). Methyl fluoroacetate is expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon an estimated vapor pressure of 31 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(2). Biodegradation data in soil were not available(SRC, 2018).

AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 6(SRC), determined from a structure estimation method(2), indicates that methyl fluoroacetate is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces is expected(3) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 3.5X10-4 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), developed using a fragment constant estimation method(2). Using this Henry's Law constant and an estimation method(3), volatilization half-lives for a model river and model lake are 5 hrs and 5 days, respectively(SRC). According to a classification scheme(4), an estimated BCF of 3(SRC), from an estimated log Kow of 0.31(2) and a regression-derived equation(2), suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC). Biodegradation data in water were not available(SRC, 2018).

ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), methyl fluoroacetate, which has an estimated vapor pressure of 31 mm Hg at 25 °C(SRC), determined from a fragment constant method(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase methyl fluoroacetate is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 98 days(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 1.6X10-13 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(2). Methyl fluoroacetate does not contain chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm(3) and, therefore, is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight(SRC).

Toxicity Summary · 1 Eintrag

IDENTIFICATION AND USE: Methyl fluoroacetate (MFA) is a mobile liquid. MFA is one of the most potent rodenticides known. However, it presents a high risk of accidental human poisoning. Because of MFA great toxicity, it came into consideration at the start of World War II as a potential warfare agent. HUMAN STUDIES: Nausea and vomiting following ingestion of very small amounts. ANIMAL STUDIES: In most animals it is a convulsant poison and causes progressive depression of respiration. It blocks the enzyme aconitase, thereby inhibiting the TCA cycle. This poison is quick-acting and has no antidote.

Soil Adsorption/Mobility · 1 Eintrag

Using a structure estimation method based on molecular connectivity indices(1), the Koc of methyl fluoroacetate can be estimated to be 6(SRC). According to a classification scheme(2), this estimated Koc value suggests that methyl fluoroacetate is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC).

Human Toxicity Excerpts/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ Human systemic effects by ingestion of very small amounts; nausea or vomiting.
Artificial Pollution Sources · 1 Eintrag

Methyl fluoroacetate's former production and use as a chemical reagent(1) may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams(SRC); its former use as a rodenticide(2) resulted in its direct release to the environment(SRC).

Environmental Bioconcentration · 1 Eintrag

An estimated BCF of 3 was calculated in fish for methyl fluoroacetate(SRC), using an estimated/ log Kow of 0.31(1) and a regression-derived equation(1). According to a classification scheme(2), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).

Verwendung und Herstellung

UsesSodium fluoroacetate, fluoroacetamide and methyl fluoroacetate are the most potent rodenticides known.
Methods of ManufacturingMFA was first prepared in 1896 by the Belgian chemist Swarts by treatment of methyl iodoacetate with silver fluoride, a rather expensive and inefficient procedure.
General Manufacturing Information · 1 Eintrag

MFA, because of its great toxicity, came into consideration at the start of World War II as a potential warfare agent. MFA seemed especially suitable as a water poison because of its "ideal" physical and chemical properties for this type of agent. In addition, its toxic action is delayed making early detection of MFA in water supplies difficult. By the end of the war several countries including England, the United States, Poland, and Germany had developed efficient pilot-plant methods for the preparation of MFA. /Former use/
