A 250 mL round bottom flask was charged with anhydrous THF (100 mL) and LiAlH4 (2.77 g, 73.1 mmol). While the suspension is stirred at 0° C., a solution of (S)-methyl 1-((S)-1-phenylethyl)aziridine-2-carboxylate EBE 06044B (10.0 g, 48.7 mmol) in THF (50 mL) was added dropwise over 20 min. The dropping funnel was washed with THF (2×3 mL) and allowed to react 20 min at 0° C. Maintaining the reaction mixture at 0° C., a solution of KOH (10%, 20 mL) was added dropwise for 20 min (caution the reaction is exothermic). The mixture was stirred for 0.5 h at 25° C. and the white precipitate removed by filtration through a celite pad that was washed with diethyl ether (30 mL). The combined organic filtrates were washed with NaH2PO4 and the aqueous layer was extracted with Et2O (3×30 mL). The combined organic phase were dried with Na2SO4 and concentrated to give ((R)-1-((S)-1-phenylethyl)aziridin-2-yl)methanol EBE 06046 as a white solid (10.4 g, 90% yield).
