Ethyl (Z)-2-(hydroxyimino)-3-oxobutyrate (2.Og) was treated with cyclooctyl iodide as described in Example 4a, Method 1, to give the title compound as a colourless liquid (2.35 g, 69%). νmax (film) 2930, 1740, 1695 cm-1, δH (CDCl3) 1.31 (3H, t), 1.4-2.0 (14H, m), 2.38 (3H, s), 4.33 (2H, q), 4.4 (1H, m). [Mass spectrum, +ve ion, MH+ (270)].
