For example, when n-propyl alcohol is allowed to react with ethyl acrylate, ethyl 2,4-dihydroxyhexanoate corresponding to Formula (4) and 4-ethyl-2-hydroxy-γ-butyrolactone corresponding to Formula (6) are formed in addition to the target ethyl sorbate under some conditions.
