0.3 mol of 1-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-1-ethanone are dissolved in 200 ml of glacial acetic acid and 31.8 g of bromine are added dropwise, while maintaining the reaction medium at a temperature below 10° C. After the addition, the reaction medium is allowed to return to room temperature and is left at this temperature for 2 hours. The reaction medium is then poured into 500 ml of ice-water and the aqueous phase is extracted with ethyl ether. The organic extracts are washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution and then with salted water, and are dried over anhydrous magnesium sulphate.
