The title compound (4.44 g, 81%) was prepared from ethyl(2R)-4-{4′-[(di-tert-butoxyphosphoryl)oxy]biphenyl-4-yl}-2-methyl-2-(methylsulfonyl)butanoate (5.8 g, 10.2 mmol) by following a procedure analogous to that described for the preparation of 4-(6-bromopyridin-3-yl)-2-methyl-2-(methylsulfonyl)butanoic acid (i.e. Example 3, Step D). MS (LCMS) m/z 539.5 (M−1). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CHLOROFORM-d) δ ppm 1.53-1.57 (m, 18H) 1.69 (s, 3H) 2.09-2.18 (m, 1H) 2.38-2.53 (m, 2H) 2.62-2.73 (m, 1H) 3.05 (s, 3H) 7.10 (d, J=8.20 Hz, 2H) 7.25-7.37 (m, 4H) 7.45-7.51 (m, 2H).
