SYMPTOMS: Symptoms of exposure to this compound include irritation of the skin, eyes, mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract, and narcosis. Other symptoms include eczemoid contact dermatitis and bronchial asthma. It can cause hypersensitivity reactions (skin sensitization), skin allergies (such as disseminated neurodermatitis), arthritis, conjunctivitis, gastrointestinal disturbances, neurological symptoms, spleen enlargement, vertigo, gastritis, diplopia, asthenia, exfoliative dermatitis and, on chronic exposure, jaundice and liver atrophy. Eye contact can cause inflammation, damage of the periocular and ocular tissues, edema and hyperemia of the lids and conjunctiva with tearing and exophthalmos, pain and burning of the eyes, redness and swelling of the lids, erosion of the corneal epithelium, iritis, iridocyclitis and retrobulbar neuritis with central scotoma. There have been cases of limitation of eye movement with proptosis, involvement of the cornea with loss of epithelium and infiltration, optic neuritis with papilledema, and lost or permanently impaired vision due to severe corneal ulceration.

Hazards Summary · 1 item

An eye irritant; Can be absorbed through skin; Can induce methemoglobinemia; May cause skin sensitization and asthma after prolonged contact; May cause kidney injury; [ICSC] The parent compound has caused allergic dermatitis and eye injury in humans; Emergency treatment: Paraphenylenediamine; In sensitized individuals, paraphenylenediamine may cause allergic contact dermatitis following application as a hair dye and asthma following inhalation; Following ingestion, can cause angioneurotic edema, methemoglobinemia, acute tubular necrosis, and hepatotoxicity; An adult died after ingestion of 3 grams of p-phenylenediamine; Another adult who ingested 1800 mg developed angioneurotic edema and acute renal failure; [HSDB] A skin, eye, mucous membrane, and upper respiratory tract irritant; May cause asthma, skin sensitization, liver atrophy, and permanent eye injury; [CAMEO] An eye irritant; May cause skin sensitization; [eChemPortal: ESIS] A mutagen; [RTECS] See p-Phenylenediamine.

Fires involving this material can be controlled with a dry chemical, carbon dioxide or Halon extinguisher. (NTP, 1992)

Use water spray, foam, powder, carbon dioxide.

First Aid Measures · 4 items

Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.

Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention .

First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.

Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention . Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!).

First Aid · 1 item

EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.

Safe StorageSeparated from food and feedstuffs.
Nonfire Spill Response · 1 item

SMALL SPILLS AND LEAKAGE: If you spill this chemical, you should dampen the solid spill material with water, then transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use absorbent paper dampened with water to pick up any remaining material. Seal your contaminated clothing and the absorbent paper in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Wash all contaminated surfaces with a soap and water solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned.

NONINFECTED SNAILS OF THE BIOMPHALARI AND BULINUS TYPES OXIDIZED P-PHENYLENEDIAMINE-2HCL TO THE CORRESPONDING COLORED TRIVALENT NITROGEN-FREE RADICALS INSTANTLY AND INTENSIVELY. THIS REACTION DID NOT OCCUR WITH SNAILS INFECTED WITH MIRACEDIA OF SCHISTOSOMES. THE REACTION WAS INHIBITED BY SODIUM AZIDE, POTASSIUM CYANIDE, SODIUM SULFIDE, AND THE POTENT MOLLUSCICIDE, 5,2'-DICHLORO-4-NITROSALICYLANILIDE.

Adverse EffectsOccupational hepatotoxin - Secondary hepatotoxins: the potential for toxic effect in the occupational setting is based on cases of poisoning by human ingestion or animal experimentation.
Exposure RoutesThe substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, through the skin and by ingestion.
