Overview
Dronedarone Hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt form of dronedarone, an orally bioavailable benzofuran derivative, with anti-arrhythmic activity. Upon oral administration, and although the exact mechanism of action through which dronedarone exerts its anti-arrhythmic effect has not been fully elucidated, it inhibits multiple voltage-gated ion channels, including sodium, potassium, and calcium ion channels, and restores the normal sinus rhythm and reduces heart rate in atrial fibrillation. It also non-competitively antagonizes adrenergic receptors.

Applications
HistoryDRONEDARONE HYDROCHLORIDE (brand name: Multaq) is an antiarrhythmic drug developed by Sanofi-Aventis. It was approved by the FDA in July 2009 for the treatment of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter, reducing the risk of cardiovascular hospitalization in patients with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) or atrial flutter (AFL). The drug was developed to create a treatment that maintains the therapeutic benefits of amiodarone while reducing associated serious side effects such as pulmonary toxicity and thyroid dysfunction. DRONEDARONE HYDROCHLORIDE is usually administered orally in tablet form. The recommended dose is 400 mg twice daily, one tablet in the morning and one in the evening.
