FIFRA Requirements · 1 item

As the federal pesticide law FIFRA directs, EPA is conducting a comprehensive review of older pesticides to consider their health and environmental effects and make decisions about their future use. Under this pesticide reregistration program, EPA examines health and safety data for pesticide active ingredients initially registered before November 1, 1984, and determines whether they are eligible for reregistration. In addition, all pesticides must meet the new safety standard of the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996. Diethanolamine 1,2-dihydro-3,6-pyridazinedione is found on List A, which contains most food use pesticides and consists of the 194 chemical cases (or 350 individual active ingredients) for which EPA issued registration standards prior to FIFRA, as amended in 1988. Case No: 0381; Pesticide type: herbicide (growth regulator); Registration Standard Date: 06/30/88; Case Status: RED Approved 06/94; OPP has made a decision that some/all uses of the pesticide are eligible for reregistration, as reflected in a Reregistration Eligibility Decision (RED) document.; Active ingredient (AI): Diethanolamine 1,2-dihydro-3,6-pyridazinedione; AI Status: The active ingredient is no longer contained in any registered pesticide products ... "cancelled."

Reactivity ProfileAn amine salt.

EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.

Nonfire Spill Response · 1 item

SMALL SPILLS AND LEAKAGE: If you spill this chemical, you should dampen the solid spill material with water, then transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use absorbent paper dampened with water to pick up any remaining material. Seal your contaminated clothing and the absorbent paper in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Wash all contaminated surfaces with a strong soap and water solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) · 1 item

RECOMMENDED RESPIRATOR: Where the neat test chemical is weighed and diluted, wear a NIOSH-approved half face respirator equipped with an organic vapor/acid gas cartridge (specific for organic vapors, HCl, acid gas and SO2) with a dust/mist filter. (NTP, 1992)

EXPERIMENTAL CIGARETS MADE FROM TOBACCOS WHICH WERE TREATED WITH SUCKER GROWTH INHIBITOR MALEIC HYDRAZIDE-DIETHANOLAMINE CONTAINED 115-420 PPB OF N-NITROSODIETHANOLAMINE & THEIR SMOKE CONTAINED 20-290 NG/CIGARET, WHEREAS HAND-SUCKERED TOBACCO & ITS SMOKE WERE FREE OF N-NITROSODIETHANOLAMINE. N-NITROSODIETHANOLAMINE IS A RELATIVELY STRONG CARCINOGEN & BASED ON RESULTS OF THIS STUDY THE USE OF MALEIC HYDRAZIDE-DIETHANOLAMINE FOR THE CULTIVATION OF TOBACCO IS QUESTIONED.

REPORTING HIGH MUTAGENIC ACTIVITY OF DIETHANOLAMINE-MALEIC HYDRAZIDE IN THE TRADESCANTIA MUTAGENICITY ASSAY, IN WHICH SOMATIC MUTATIONS IN THE STAMEN HAIRS WERE OBSERVED. FOR EACH TREATMENT, 30-40 CUTTINGS WITH INFLORESCENCES OF CLONE 4430, & 15-20 CUTTINGS OF CLONE 02, WERE TREATED WITH MALEIC HYDRAZIDE & ITS SALTS, DISSOLVED IN 0.05 M CITRATE-PHOSPHATE BUFFER PH 5.5. DIETHANOLAMINE MALEIC HYDRAZIDE WAS APPLIED ONLY ON INFLORESCENCES FOR 24 HR @ 25 °C. CULTIVATION TOOK PLACE IN A CONTROLLED-ENVIRONMENT CHAMBER WITH A 16 HR DAY & PHOTON FLUENCE RATE OF 400-700 NM, 300 UMOLES/SQ M/SEC & 25 (18) °C DAY (NIGHT) TEMP. ABOUT 1500-3000 STAMEN HAIRS WERE SCORED EACH DAY. FREQUENCY OF MUTATION EVENTS SCORED ACCORDING TO METHOD OF UNDERBRINK. ONE OR MORE CONTIGUOUS PINK CELLS WERE CONSIDERED TO HAVE RESULTED FROM ONE MUTATION EVENT.

MALEIC HYDRAZIDE & ITS DIETHANOLAMINE SALT DID NOT APPRECIABLY INCR THE INCIDENCE OF TUMORS IN RATS WHEN GIVEN SC (2 MG TWICE WEEKLY FOR 65 WK).
