Health HazardsInhalation causes irritation of nose and throat. Contact with eyes causes irritation. (USCG, 1999)
Hazards Summary · 1 item

An eye, nose, and throat irritant; Emergency treatment: Iodides; After ingestion of iodides, hypersensitivity reactions, e.g., angioedema and urticaria, may occur; Chronic ingestion may cause various skin diseases, goiter, hypothyroidism, and congenital thyroid effects; [HSDB] An irritant; [MSDSonline] See Iodine for the TLV of Iodides.

Reactive GroupSalts, Acidic
Reactivity ProfileAMMONIUM IODIDE is light sensitive, becomes yellow or brown on exposure to air and light because of liberation of Iodine [Merck 11th ed. 1989]. Bromine trifluoride reacts explosively with ammonium iodide [Mellor 2 Supp. 1:165 1956].

DescriptionAmmonium iodide (chemical formula:NH4I) is an inorganic compound consisting of ammonium and iodide. It can be prepared by the reaction between hydroiodic acid (or hydrogen iodide gas) with ammonia or ammonia hydroxide. It can be used in photographic chemicals and some medications. It can also be supplemented to many animal feed formulations as a dietary source of Iodine. It can be added to a release agent and being capable of increasing the throughput and success rate due to smoother bead release process, reducing damage to platinum ware due to forced bead release as well as reducing crucible cleaning requirement.

UsesIt is used in photographic chemicals and some medications. It is a catalyst for dethioacetalization reaction.

UsesWhite crystals made by the action of ammonium hydroxide on hydroiodic acid followed by crystallization. Soluble in water and alcohol, ammonium iodide was used as a halide in collodion formulas, particularly in situations where it was needed for use immediately. Ammonium iodide decomposes quickly when mixed with plain collodion, releasing iodine.

UsesIn photographic chemicals.

General DescriptionOdorless white solid. Sinks and mixes with water.
