Drugs used to prevent SEIZURES or reduce their severity.
A class of drugs that act by selective inhibition of calcium influx through cellular membranes.
A heterogeneous group of drugs used to produce muscle relaxation, excepting the neuromuscular blocking agents. They have their primary clinical and therapeutic uses in the treatment of muscle spasm and immobility associated with strains, sprains, and injuries of the back and, to a lesser degree, injuries to the neck. They have been used also for the treatment of a variety of clinical conditions that have in common only the presence of skeletal muscle hyperactivity, for example, the muscle spasms that can occur in MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. (From Smith and Reynard, Textbook of Pharmacology, 1991, p358)
Agents that inhibit the actions of the parasympathetic nervous system. The major group of drugs used therapeutically for this purpose is the MUSCARINIC ANTAGONISTS.
Drugs used to cause dilation of the blood vessels.
DescriptionApiresone is a central skeletal muscle relaxant with various pharmacological effects. Animal experiments suggest that eperisone hydrochloride can dose-dependently inhibit decerebral tonic (γ-rigid) and ischemic decerebral tonic (α-rigid) induced by interthalamic transection in rats, and inhibit the stimulation of the dorsal spinal cord in cats with spinal cord injury. The evoked monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflex potentials may reduce the sensitivity of muscle spindles by inhibiting the γ-neuron system.
UsesEperisone is used to improve muscle tension in cervicobrachial syndrome, frozen shoulder, and low back pain; and to treat spastic paralysis in cerebrovascular disorders, postoperative sequelae, cervical spondylosis, spinal vascular disorders, subacute spinal cord optic neuropathy, and other brain and spinal cord diseases.
