Corrosive to moistened rabbit skin; Sodium metasilicate was not sensitizing in a local lymph node assay study of mice; Similar uses and adverse effects are expected from the hydrous and anhydrous forms (Sodium metasilicate pentahydrate, Sodium metasilicate nonahydrate, Sodium metasilicate, Sodium silicate, and Potassium silicate). One case of occupational contact urticaria reported from sodium silicate; [OECD SIDS: Soluble Silicates - 2004] Causes burns; Inhalation may cause corrosive injuries to upper respiratory tract; [Sigma-Aldrich MSDS] See Sodium metasilicate.

Used as a starting material for zeolites and silica catalysts, as an adhesive and binder, corrosion inhibitor, penetrating sealant, fireproofing agent (wood, paper, and fabric), detergent booster, and shell coating material to preserve eggs; Also used in cements, drilling fluids, and waste water treatment; [Merck Index] Alkali metal silicates are used as starting materials for products like silicas and zeolites, in detergents and cleaners, and pulp and paper production; Also used to a lesser extent in soil stabilization and sealing, adhesives and binders (construction materials, paperboard and cardboard, ceramic binders, refractories, welding rods, and foundry molds and cores), surface coatings (titanium dioxide production, paints for masonry and glass, and spray coatings for tunnel construction and mining), water treatment (corrosion protection), enhanced oil recovery, and textile processing (bleach and dye stabilizing); [OECD SIDS: Soluble Silicates - 2004]

DescriptionSodium metasilicate non-hydrate is the non-hydrate form of sodium metasilicate. Sodium metasilicate (chemical formula: Na2SiO3) is a kind of sodium silicate, appearing as a powdered or flaked solid. It is used in cements, passive fire protection, textile and lumber processing, refractories, and automobiles. It has various kinds of applications. The major applications are in detergents, paper, water treatment, and construction materials as well as dye auxiliary. In addition, it also has many niche and hobby applications such as used in food preservation, metal repair, automotive repair, home-brewing, aquaculture and pottery. It is manufactured through the reaction between sodium carbonate and silicon dioxide.
UsesSodium Metasilicate Nonahydrate is used in preparation method and application of Cationic Polyacrylamide modified Silicon Dioxide/Calcium Inosilicate material in wastewater treatment.
UsesSilicon (Si) has been reported to effectively manage some pests and diseases of plants.Exogenous application of silicon (Si) in the form of sodium metasilicate reduced disease development caused by Penicillium expansum and Monilinia fructicola in sweet cherry fruit at 20 degrees C. The inhibition of fruit decay was correlated closely with Si concentrations.
