Pharmacology

Metabolism/Metabolites · 1 item

Barium compounds are absorbed via ingestion and inhalation, the extent of which depends on the individual compound. In the body, the majority of the barium is found in the bone, while small amounts exists in the muscle, adipose, skin, and connective tissue. Barium is not metabolized in the body, but it may be transported or incorporated into complexes or tissues. Barium is excreted in the urine and faeces. (L214)

Uses & manufacturing

General Manufacturing InformationBarium azide (Ba(N3)2): ACTIVE
Applications · 3 items

DescriptionBarium azide, is a crystalline solid with not less than 50% water by mass that explodes when shocked or heated. Barium azide decomposes and gives off nitrogen at 240°F (115.5°C) and is soluble in water. The four-digit UN identification number for barium azide is 1571. Its primary use is in high explosives.

UsesHigh explosives.

General DescriptionA slurry of white crystals. When dry, a high explosive that easily ignited and quick to burn vigorously. Wetting reduces sensitivity to shock and heat. Generates toxic oxides of nitrogen when burned.

Preparation methods

PreparationBarium azide may be prepared by reacting sodium azide with a soluble barium salt. The solution is concentrated to allow crystals grow. Crystals will explode if fully dried, or subject to friction. Product should be stored damp with ethanol.

BARIUM AZIDE, WETTED WITH NOT LESS THAN 50% WATER is a suspension or slurry of of an unstable solid in sufficient water to allow safe shipping and handling. May explode if allowed to dry out and then heated or shocked. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, strong reducing agents.

BARIUM AZIDE, [DRY OR WETTED WITH < 50 % WATER] may decompose explosively when subjected to shock or heat. Wetting reduces its sensitivity of shock. Can burn very vigorously producing toxic oxides of nitrogen. May form violently explosive salts in combination with carbon disulfide. Sensitivity toward decomposition can be heightened by metal salts or by traces of strong acids [Sax, 9th ed., 1996, p. 298].

Toxicology

TreatmentIntravenous infusion of potassium often relieves many of the symptoms of barium toxicity. (L214)
Health Effects · 1 item

The health effects of the different barium compounds depend on how well the compound dissolves in water or the stomach contents. At low doses, barium acts as a muscle stimulant, while higher doses affect the nervous system, causing cardiac irregularities, tremors, weakness, anxiety, dyspnea, paralysisand possibly death. Barium may also cause gastrointestinal disturbances, damage the kidneys and cause decreases in body weight. (L214)

Exposure RoutesOral (L214) ; inhalation (L214)
Toxicity Summary · 1 item

Barium is a competitive potassium channel antagonist that blocks the passive efflux of intracellular potassium, resulting in a shift of potassium from extracellular to intracellular compartments. The intracellular translocation of potassium results in a decreased resting membrane potential, making the muscle fibers electrically unexcitable and causing paralysis. Some of these barium's effects may also be due to barium induced neuromuscular blockade and membrane depolarization. (L214)

Signs and Symptoms · 1 item

Ingesting excess barium may cause vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, difficulties in breathing, increased or decreased blood pressure, numbness around the face, and muscle weakness. High levels may result in changes in heart rhythm or paralysis and possibly death. (L214)

Carcinogen ClassificationNo indication of carcinogenicity to humans (not listed by IARC).
