Hazards Summary
May have violent reaction with water; [HSDB] A strong reducing agent that is highly flammable; Reacts with water evolving methane; May form unstable peroxides on contact with air; [CAMEO] Apart from their instability in air and their caustic basic properties, organomagnesium compounds and the precipitated inorganic magnesium salts produced during their use display no pronounced toxicity or side effects of environmental concern. [Ullmann] Reacts violently with water; May form explosive peroxides; A corrosive substance that can cause injury to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract; Inhalation may cause chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema; Inhalation of high concentrations can cause CNS depression; [MSDSonline]
Reactivity Profile
Organometallics, such as METHYL MAGNESIUM BROMIDE, are reactive with many other groups. Incompatible with acids and bases. Organometallics are good reducing agents and therefore incompatible with oxidizing agents. Often reactive with water to generate toxic or flammable gases.

Methyl magnesium bromide, in ethyl ether
UN1928
Div 4.3 Dangerous when wet material (49 eCFR § 173.124)
Div 4.3 Dangerous when wet material (49 eCFR § 173.124)
PG I: the degree of danger presented by the material is great
Air and Water Reactions
Highly flammable. The solution reacts with water or moisture in the air to form flammable methane gas. The heat from this reaction may be sufficient to ignite the produced methane. Unstable peroxides may form with exposure of the ether to air. This is a slow process.
Safety & protection
Fire Fighting Procedures
If material on fire or involved in fire: Do not extinguish fire unless flow can be stopped. Use "alcohol" foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Cool all affected containers with flooding quantities of water. Apply water from as far a distance as possible. Do not use water on material itself. /Methyl magnesium bromide in ethyl ether/
Evacuation: If fire becomes uncontrollable or container is exposed to direct flame - consider evacuation of one-third (1/3) mile radius. /Methyl magnesium bromide in ethyl ether/
Storage Conditions
...MATERIALS WHICH ARE TOXIC AS STORED OR WHICH CAN DECOMPOSE INTO TOXIC COMPONENTS...SHOULD BE STORED IN A COOL, WELL VENTILATED PLACE, OUT OF THE DIRECT RAYS OF THE SUN, AWAY FROM AREAS OF HIGH FIRE HAZARD, AND SHOULD BE PERIODICALLY INSPECTED. INCOMPATIBLE MATERIALS SHOULD BE ISOLATED... /TOXIC HAZARDS/
Disposal Methods
SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.
Preventive Measures
If material not on fire and not involved in fire: Keep sparks, flames, and other sources of ignition away. Build dikes to contain flow as necessary. Use water spray to knock-down vapors. Do not use water on material itself. /Methyl magnesium bromide in ethyl ether/
Personnel protection: Avoid breathing vapors. Keep upwind. ... Do not handle broken packages unless wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. Wash away any material which may have contacted the body with copious amounts of water or soap and water. /Methyl magnesium bromide in ethyl ether/
If material leaking (not on fire) consider evacuation from downwind area based on amount of material spilled, location and weather conditions. /Methyl magnesium bromide in ethyl ether/
