It is an active ingredient of Chinese herbal medicine Scutellaria baicalensis. It has a role as an antiatherosclerotic agent, an anticoronaviral agent, an EC 2.7.7.48 (RNA-directed RNA polymerase) inhibitor, a ferroptosis inhibitor, an antioxidant, an antibacterial agent, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, an antineoplastic agent, a prodrug, a neuroprotective agent, an EC 3.4.21.26 (prolyl oligopeptidase) inhibitor, a plant metabolite and a cardioprotective agent. It is a glucosiduronic acid, a dihydroxyflavone, a glycosyloxyflavone and a monosaccharide derivative. It is functionally related to a baicalein. It is a conjugate acid of a baicalin(1-).

Substances that prevent infectious agents or organisms from spreading or kill infectious agents in order to prevent the spread of infection.
Anti-inflammatory agents that are non-steroidal in nature. In addition to anti-inflammatory actions, they have analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions. They act by blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase, which converts arachidonic acid to cyclic endoperoxides, precursors of prostaglandins. Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis accounts for their analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions; other mechanisms may contribute to their anti-inflammatory effects.
Compounds or agents that combine with an enzyme in such a manner as to prevent the normal substrate-enzyme combination and the catalytic reaction.
Drugs that are used to treat asthma.
A 2025 systematic review notes that while Baicalin has poor oral bioavailability due to its low water solubility and limited membrane permeability, Baicalein exhibits superior lipophilicity and permeability. Baicalin is hydrolyzed to Baicalein by gut microbiota and enzymes. UDP-glucuronosyltransferases in enterocytes in the intestines and in the liver can convert Baicalein back to Baicalin. Thus, conversion of Bacalin to Baicalein facilitates systemic uptake while re-glucuronidation of Bacalein to Bacalin potentially prolongs the therapeutic effects.
