EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.

IN GENERAL, MATERIALS WHICH ARE TOXIC AS STORED OR WHICH CAN DECOMP INTO TOXIC COMPONENTS...SHOULD BE STORED IN A COOL, WELL-VENTILATED PLACE, OUT OF DIRECT RAYS OF THE SUN, AWAY FROM AREAS OF HIGH FIRE HAZARD, & SHOULD BE PERIODICALLY INSPECTED... INCOMPATIBLE MATERIALS SHOULD BE ISOLATED FROM EACH OTHER.

Nonfire Spill ResponseSMALL SPILLS AND LEAKAGE: Use absorbent paper to pick up spilled material. Follow by washing surfaces well first with alcohol, then with soap and water. Seal all wastes in vapor-tight plastic bags for eventual disposal.

Toxicology

Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts · 1 item

Diethyl ethylphosphonate (DEP) was tested for mutagenicity using the Salmonella/microsome preincubation assay using the standard protocol approved by the National Toxicology Program. DEP was tested at doses of 0.33, 1.0, 3.3, 10, and 10.2 mg/plate in as many as 5 Salmonella typhimurium strains (TA1535, TA1537, TA97, TA98, and TA100) in the presence and absence of rat or hamster liver S-9. DEP was negative in these tests and the highest ineffective dose tested in any S. typhimurium strain was 10.2 mg/plate.

UsesDiethyl Ethylphosphonate can be used as a flame retardant, and also used as a general reagent in phosphinoalkene and phosphinoalkyne synthesis.

UsesDiethyl ethylphosphonate is used for heavy-metal extraction and solvent separation. It is also used as a gasoline additive, antifoam agent, plasticizer and textile conditioner. Further, it serves as an antistatic agent, flame retardant and as a general reagent in phosphinoalkene and phosphinoalkyne synthesis.

General DescriptionColorless liquid with a mild odor.

Preparation methods · 1 item

PreparationTriethyl phosphite and the catalyst ethyl p-toluenesulfonate were mixed and stirred until homogeneous, then heated to the reflux temperature of triethyl phosphite. After reflux reaction, the mixture was distilled under reduced pressure, and the fraction at 118–120 °C was collected under a vacuum of 0.095 MPa to obtain the colorless and transparent product diethyl ethylphosphonate.
