SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.

Preventive Measures · 1 item

SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.

BD RATS RECEIVING SC 15 WEEKLY X 53 MG/KG FOR 470 DAYS: 7/10 HAD LOCAL SARCOMA, 1 BRONCHIAL, 1 MAMMARY & 1 OVARIAN CARCINOMA. /FROM TABLE/

Several direct acting mutagens were tested for mutagenic activity in adult Drosophila melanogaster when administered in feeding or as an injected dose. An inhibitor or cytochrome p450, 1-phenylimidazole, administered at concentrations of 2.5, 4 and 10 mmol, was not mutagenic in Drosophila. Methyl-p-toluenesulfonate applied orally was a weak mutagen. When administered simultaneously with 1-phenylimidazole, a concentration dependent increase was noted in mutagenic activity of methyl-p-toluenesulfonate. Following injection, mutagenesis by methyl-p-toluenesulfonate was considerable. Ethyl-p-toluenesulfonate demonstrated marginal mutagenesis in Drosophila when orally applied but was decidedly mutagenic on injection. Simultaneous treatment with 4 mmol 1-phenylimidazole and 1 mmole of ethyl-p-toluenesulfonate did not alter mutagenesis nor did treatment with diethylmaleate (glutathione depletion). Combined treatment with 2 mmol ethyl-p-toluenesulfonate and 2 mmol 1-phenylimidazole produced a statistically significant increase in mutagenesis. /It was concluded/ that weak mutagenesis by p-toluenesulfonates after feeding experiments compared to considerable effects after injection suggests metabolic deactivation in the gut.

The carcinogenic activity of 12 direct alkylating substances was tested in 535 BD rats. Local sarcomas were produced by the subcutaneous injections once a week of p-toluene sulfonic acid methylester. Only a jew tumors were observed following treatment with p-toluene sulfonic acid ethylester and p-toluenesulfonic acid butylester were not carcinogenic.

UsesMethyl p-toluenesulfonate is used as a methylating agent in organic synthesis. It acts as a catalyst for alkyd resins. It is also employed in selective 1-substitution reaction of tetrazole. Further, it is used in the preparation of dyes.

UsesMethyl p-Toluenesulfonate can be used in the manufacture of dyes and organic synthesis, and also is the raw materials of methylation.

General DescriptionMethyl p-toluenesulfonate is sulfonate ester present as potentially genotoxic impurity in drug substances. Kinetics of reactions of methyl p-toluenesulfonate with N,N-dimethylaniline has been investigated. It participates in selective 1-substitution reaction of tetrazole.

General DescriptionMethyl p-toluenesulfonate is a solid or liquid with a low melting point. Its melting point is 25–28°C, and it undergoes a phase transition between liquid and solid at room temperature depending on the season. Caking occurs when temperatures are low, which is a normal physical phenomenon. It is hygroscopic, so care must be taken to protect it from moisture during storage.

Preparation methods · 1 item

PreparationMethyl p-toluenesulfonate was synthesized by the reaction of p-toluenesulfonyl chloride with methanol. Mix p-toluenesulfonyl chloride and methanol, slowly add 25% sodium hydroxide solution, control the temperature below 25 °C, stop adding alkali when the pH is 9, continue stirring for 2 hours, and leave overnight. The lower layer of reactant was taken, the upper layer was extracted with benzene, the extract was recovered with benzene and then combined with the lower layer, washed with water and 5% potassium carbonate solution in turn, dried and distilled under reduced pressure to obtain the finished product of methyl p-toluenesulfonate.
