87249-11-4CCc1cccc2c3c([nH]c12)[C@](CC)(CC(=O)O)OCC3NNYBQONXHNTVIJ-KRWDZBQOSA-N(S)-etodolac is the S-enantiomer of etodolac. It is a preferential inhibitor of cyclo-oxygenase 2 and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, whereas the enantiomer, (R)-etodolac, is inactive. The racemate is commonly used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and for the alleviation of postoperative pain. It has a role as a non-narcotic analgesic and a cyclooxygenase 2 inhibitor. It is an enantiomer of a (R)-etodolac.

Anti-inflammatory agents that are non-steroidal in nature. In addition to anti-inflammatory actions, they have analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions. They act by blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase, which converts arachidonic acid to cyclic endoperoxides, precursors of prostaglandins. Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis accounts for their analgesic, antipyretic, and platelet-inhibitory actions; other mechanisms may contribute to their anti-inflammatory effects.
A subclass of cyclooxygenase inhibitors with specificity for CYCLOOXYGENASE-2.
