EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.;SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment.;INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing.;INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. Be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital if advised by a physician. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital. (NTP, 1992)

General First Aid:;· Call 911 or emergency medical service.;· Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, take precautions to protect themselves and avoid contamination.;· Move victim to fresh air if it can be done safely.;· Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult.;· If victim is not breathing:;-- DO NOT perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation; the victim may have ingested or inhaled the substance.;-- If equipped and pulse detected, wash face and mouth, then give artificial respiration using a proper respiratory medical device (bag-valve mask, pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other device).;-- If no pulse detected or no respiratory medical device available, provide continuous compressions. Toxicology

Environmental Fate · 3 items

TERRESTRIAL FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 1,500(SRC), determined from a log Kow of 3.31(2) and a regression-derived equation(3), indicates that N,N-diethylaniline is expected to have low mobility in soil(SRC). A pKa value of 6.57(4) suggests that N,N-diethylaniline will exist partially in the protonated form in moist soils and the protonated form of N,N-diethylaniline is expected to bind strongly to soil surfaces(SRC). Volatilization of N,N-diethylaniline from moist soil surfaces is expected to be an important fate process for the neutral species(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 1.9X10-4 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure of 0.14 mm Hg(5) and water solubility of 139 mg/l(6) at 25 °C. N,N-Diethylaniline is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon its vapor pressure(5). N,N-Diethylaniline achieved 0% of the theoretical BOD in a sewage sludge test during a 5 day incubation period and was considered persistent(7).

AQUATIC FATE: Based on a classification scheme(1), an estimated Koc value of 1,500(SRC), determined from a log Kow of 3.31(2) and a regression-derived equation(3), indicates that N,N-diethylaniline is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment(SRC). Volatilization from water surfaces is expected(3) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 1.9X10-4 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), derived from its vapor pressure of 0.14 mm Hg(4) and water solubility of 139 mg/l(5) at 25 °C. Using this Henry's Law constant and an estimation method(3), volatilization half-lives for a model river and model lake are 5 hours and 6.5 days, respectively(SRC). A pKa of 6.57(6) suggests that N,N-diethylaniline will exist partially in the protonated form in aqueous environments and the protonated form of N,N-diethylaniline is not expected to volatilize from water. According to a classification scheme(7), BCF values of 17-161 measured in carp(8) suggest bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low to high. N,N-Diethylaniline achieved 0% of the theoretical BOD in a sewage sludge during a 5 day incubation period and was considered persistent(9). Using the Japanese MITI test, N,N-diethylaniline achieved 0% of theoretical BOD in an acclimated study during a 4 week incubation(8).

ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), N,N-diethylaniline, which has a vapor pressure of 0.14 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase N,N-diethylaniline is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 2 hours(SRC), calculated from its estimated rate constant of 1.6X10-10 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(3) determined using a structure estimation method(3).

DescriptionDiethyl aniline is a colorless to yellow liquid.Molecular weight=149.26; Boiling point=216℃; Flashpoint=85℃; Autoignition temperature=630℃. HazardIdentification (based on NFPA-704 M Rating System): Health3, Flammability 2, Reactivity 0. Slightly soluble in water.

UsesN,N-Diethylaniline is used in dyestuffs and in the synthesis of other intermediates and pharmaceuticals.

UsesDEA (diethanolamine) is an organic alkali used in formulations to neutralize organic acids and thus adjust pH. It is usually listed on ingredient labels preceding the compound that it is neutralizing. oleth-3 phosphate, for example, is a powerful emulsifier, but it is very acidic when it is made, so manufacturers use DeA to neutralize it and improve the nature of a formulation.

UsesAs dyestuff intermediate, in organic syntheses.

General DescriptionA colorless to yellow liquid with a fishlike odor, that is strongly corrosive. Irritating to skin, eyes and mucous membranes and moderately toxic by inhalation, absorption and ingestion. Flash point 185°F. Used in dyes and in the production of organic chemicals.
