Applications
Uses1-Chloro-4-methoxybutane (cas# 17913-18-7) is a compound useful in organic synthesis.
Preparation methods
Preparation(1) Add 0.50 mol tetrahydrofuran and 0.55 mol anhydrous methanol to a reaction flask, cool the mixture to 0°C using an ice-water/methanol cooling bath, and then add 0.0084 mol magnesium chloride to the mixture and stir until homogeneous; (2) Add 0.80 mol thionyl chloride dropwise to the reaction mixture formed in (1) through a constant pressure dropping funnel, and maintain the dropping temperature at 6°C by adjusting the dropping rate of thionyl chloride; (3) After the thionyl chloride is added, remove the cold water bath and add the mixture to the reaction mixture formed in (2). Add 0.15 mol of cyclohexane to the reaction solution, then gradually heat the reaction solution to 96°C, and react under stirring and reflux until no gas is released. The reaction time is 1.5 hours. Stop heating and cool the reaction solution to room temperature. (4) Transfer the reaction solution formed in (3) to a separatory funnel. First, extract all the product with pentane, then wash with distilled water until clean, then add saturated NaHCO3 solution to wash until clean, then wash with distilled water until clean, and finally add 0.12 mol of anhydrous magnesium sulfate to the oily product obtained by separation for drying. (5) Transfer the oily product formed in (4) to a three-necked flask for distillation. First, collect the extractant, solvent, etc., then gradually raise the temperature to above 130°C and collect the fraction in the range of 140-146°C to obtain 4-chlorobutyl methyl ether.
