Procedure

685 g (2.74 mol) of o-bromobenzyl bromide are refluxed together with 2.74 mol of a 30% strength sodium methylate solution in methanol for 15 hours. The mixture is cooled and then concentrated, the residue is taken up in ethyl acetate, and the solution is washed with water. The organic phase is dried over sodium sulfate and then concentrated. 478.2 g (87%) of product are obtained as a colorless liquid.
