Procedure

16 g of magnesium dioxide were added to a solution of 3.2 g of ethyl 3-ethyl-2-hydroxy-3-butenoate in 65 ml of methylene chloride and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 11/2 hours. and was filtered. The solvent was distilled from the filtrate under reduced pressure to obtain ethyl 3-ethyl-2-oxo-3-butenoate in the form of a colorless liquid soluble in ether and alcohols and slighly soluble in water.
