Procedure

Ethyl E-7-((4-phenyl)phenyl)hept-4-enoate was saponified in methanolic sodium hydroxide at room temperature. The resulting acid, E-7-((4-phenyl)phenyl)hept-4-enoic acid, was obtained in >95% purity after chromatography. The product was fully characterized by spectral analysis infrared and nuclear magnetic spectroscopy) and combustion analysis.
