The reaction mixture was quenched with ice cold water (50 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×70 mL). The combined extracts were washed with brine, dried and concentrated. The resulting crude product was purified by normal silica gel (100-200 mesh) column chromatography using 15% ethyl acetate in hexane as eluent to get (1-pyridin-2-yl-cyclopentyl)-acetonitrile (434) (1.2 g, 82%) as a colorless liquid.
