Procedure

139 g (0.5 mol) of ethyl 2-cyano-3,3-diphenylacrylate (Uvinul 3035), 200 ml of cyclohexanol and 10 g of Na2CO3 were reacted together at 150° C. with distillative removal of the ethanol formed, assisted by a stream of nitrogen. After about 6 h, the reaction mixture was filtered hot in order to remove the Na2CO3. After the filtrate had been cooled, the precipitate which had formed was filtered off, washed with petroleum ether and dried, giving 111 g (67%) of cyclohexyl 2-cyano-3,3-diphenylacrylate as a colorless solid. [λmax 300 nm; E11, (MeOH) 381]
